Shakespeare & Company to Present New Opera PEARL at Tina Packer Playhouse, 8/5

Pearl, a new opera in development, was inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, a story of love, condemnation, betrayal and acceptance in which protagonist Hester Prynne secretly conceives a child with the Reverend Dimmesdale. In this modern retelling, Pearl, the child born of the scandal, presents the story from her point of view as an adult woman, a mother and a writer. The story's characters struggle with the central question, "How can love be sin?"

BWW Reviews: THE BARGAIN & THE BUTTERFLY Spreads its Wings

Occasionally a play comes along that, no matter how hard I try, I can't stop thinking about. Such was my experience over the weekend with THE BARGAIN & THE BUTTERFLY, inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Artist of the Beautiful', conceived & directed by Katharine Noon for The Ghost Road Theatre Company.

The Ghost Road Company Opens THE BARGAIN AND THE BUTTERFLY Tonight

This March, The Ghost Road Company presents the world premiere of its latest ensemble-devised production, The Bargain and the Butterfly. Inspired by American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story, The Artist of the Beautiful, and under the direction of Katharine Noon, the Los Angeles-based theater company has created a beautifully haunting new play, which explores the delicate intersection of genius and madness. Performances will be held at Artworks Theatre (6569 Santa Monica Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90038) tonight, March 26 through Sunday, April 7, 2013.

BWW Reviews: THE SCARLET LETTER at University of Texas is Best When Faithful

With Hester Prynne, the heroine of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne created one of American literature's most wonderfully flawed characters. There's much to love about Hester and much that is worrisome. She's a sinner and an adulterous, but she's also a courageous woman who wishes to atone and take responsibility for her misdeeds. Yes, Hester Prynne is flawed. So too is the current stage adaptation of The Scarlet Letter now playing at the University of Texas. Like Hester, there is much to love about this production, but there is much that is worrisome as well.
