Photo Coverage: Freddy Cole Opens At Birdland

Freddy Cole opened at Birdland last night and BroadwayWorld was there. The New York Times calls Freddy Cole, 'the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.' People Magazine praises his 'gorgeous autumnal baritone, expressive phrasing and pitch-perfect feel for jazz standards, pop tunes and love ballads.' Uncle to Natalie Cole, brother of Nat 'King' Cole, pianist and vocalist Freddy Cole doesn't apologize for sounding a little bit like his iconic elder brother. While there are certain unmistakable similarities, many consider his voice to be smokier, jazzier even. Cole's annual visit is the perfect blend of jazz and great American holiday standards. In this engagement tenor saxophonist Houston Person will join Elias Bailey, bass, Randy Napoleon, guitar, and Curtis Boyd, drums. Freddy Cole will appear June 21-25 @ 11 PM

In IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT, she takes us back to 1950s Elizabeth, New Jersey, where real-life tragedy strikes as a series of airplanes fall from the sky, leaving the community reeling.

BWW Review: Michael Feinstein's SING ME A SWING SONG Breezes, Bounces and Bows at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2016 Popular Song series at the Appel Room ended this year's agenda on June 8 with host Michael Feinstein's appreciation of the interconnection between swing and popular song, a subject about which he's clearly enthusiastic. Each musical era, he suggests, is previewed by a song marking change: “Alexander's Ragtime Band” ushered in ragtime, “Sing, Sing Sing,” prefaced swing, “Rock Around the Clock” heralded rock n' roll. With the able assistance of Musical Director Tedd Firth (also on piano), Firth's Big Band, and special guest vocalists Allyson Briggs, Jeremy Jordan, and Catherine Ross, Feinstein and Co. delivered a lively evening of familiar and eclectic material.
