BWW Review: 1st Stage Takes on a Rarely Done Musical With FLOYD COLLINS

1st Stage's production is - for me, at least - a very, very welcome addition to the 2015-2016 theatre season. While Guettel's intricate and original score is, quite simply, extraordinary - and reason enough to make the trek to the McLean/Tysons Corner area to hear it sung live - Director Nick Olcott and his talented and committed cast and design team offer other reasons to pay this little gem of a production a visit.

BWW Review: MEMPHIS at Theatre Three

By 2009, when the musical MEMPHIS opened on Broadway, America had nearly 60 years since the Civil Rights Movement began in the 1950s. But, despite significant progress, headlines even today continue to affirm our society's failings in the areas of discrimination and prejudice. Monday night, when the house lights faded for opening night of MEMPHIS at Theatre Three, the crowd cheered. Although I was just as eager to support the company's newest production, I'd not considered how moved I would be by the historic, but still timely themes.

BWW Review: Let There Be No Prejudice Here

It is safe to say that Monomoy has done a spectacular job staging Austen's work: from the chosen cast, the beautiful period costumes and the way in which it just felt like the novel should feel, there is really nothing bad to say about this production. The set was beautiful, and without moving more than a few chairs around made it both appropriate and very efficient throughout the entire show. The portrayal of the ball, a wonderful scene filled with dancing, merriment and a bit of tenseness, was beautifully staged. It is difficult to transform a stage into something that makes the audience really feel as though it becomes part of the period in which the story takes place, but this was successfully done at this production. And, what would a wonderful production be without the actors who make it all possible? Darren Brown as Mr. Darcy is able to capture the wonderful mix of superiority, insecurity and just the general sense of discomfort that make Mr. Darcy the truly intriguing character he is. There are moments when Brown makes Darcy appear noticeably uncomfortable around others, even when he simultaneously trying to uphold his "mightier-than-thou" appearance, and the transition this character makes (or rather, the revelation, as I don't think Darcy really changes his personality…he just lets its out) from being stern and unapproachable to vulnerable and just plain human is astounding. Brown really does a great job in showing how such a man can change, when given sufficient and acceptable reason and chance to.

BWW Reviews: Sandy Rustin's Newest Play THE COTTAGE at The Engeman

In attending the newest work from Sandy Rustin, The Cottage, a 2014 Reva Shiner Comedy Award finalist, you will feel inspired watching an original production being developed. This hilarious story, inspired by the works of Noel Coward, runs through September 6th at the gorgeous John W. Engeman Theatre of Northport, Long Island.

BWW Reviews: APT's Superb PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Reveals Gender Parity

First published more than 200 years ago, Jane Austen's famous novel Pride and Prejudice comes to American Players Theatre (APT) and revisits significant gender issues audiences might assume have been resolved. Former Milwaukee Reperatory Theater Artistic Director Joseph Hanreddy and acclaimed J.R. Sullivan adapted one of the world's most popular novels into a compelling, senstive stage play that breathes life into Austen's romantic couples who search for their futures on Spring Green's Up the Hill stage this summer.
