The Suzi Bass Awards, Inc. announced winners for the 2013-2014 Atlanta professional theatrical season this evening at the awards ceremony at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center. The evening was hosted by Rob Cleveland. Presenters included Deadre Moore, Ingrid Cole and Christy Baggett, Eric and Bethany Mendenhall, Veronika Duerr and Laura Cole, Clifton Guterman and WABE's John Lemley, Tess and Mark Kincaid, and Karen Howell and Chris Ekholm. James Gordon still cannot shake the consequences of sparing Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot's life, especially now that Fish Mooney and Don Falcone know he's still alive. They send the ruthless Victor Zsasz to send a serious message to Gordon. The criminal elements continue to clash as tensions between Gotham's crime families, the Falcones and Maroni's, move to a boiling point. The College of New Rochelle's production of NINE including Louise Edeiken, an original Broadway cast member, will be performed November 7 to 16 at the College. Based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8½, the show examines the midlife crisis and creative block of film director Guido Contini, as told first-hand by the romantic partners who have influenced him and become entangled in his life.

As last week's episode of GOTHAM ended, Barbara Kean opened Jim Gordon's apartment door to discover Oswald Cobblepot greeting them across the threshold. Oswald is bonding with Don Marone, rival crime boss to the Falcone family. Earlier, Gordon and partner Harvey Bullock put a stop to Gotham's first vigilante who was nabbing corrupt officials and floating off to their deaths by weather balloon. Throughout the show, hints about an important place called Arkham were dropped by various characters. The production marks the show's Canadian regional premier, led by a cast of rising Vancouver talents. The musical features music by Michael Gore, and lyrics byDean Pitchford, who collaborated on the score for FAME. Lawrence D. Cohen supplies the show's book, after previously adapting the screenplay for the original film version of the tale (directed by Brian DePalma).
One of the most buzzed about premieres of this fall TV season has been Fox's Batman-prequel GOTHAM. The first episode aired last night, and you can read Jeffrey Walker's recap here. Recently I participated in a conference call with GOTHAM star Ben McKenzie. McKenzie (THE O.C., SOUTHLAND) plays Detective James Gordon, who goes on to be Gotham City's legendary Commissioner Gordon. McKenzie discusses playing police officers in very different shows, the draw of comic books shows and movies, and Gordon's iconic facial hair.
