BWW Review: One Woman Creates Many Voices in MR. JOY at Cincinnati Playhouse In The Park
by Abby Rowold - Oct 1, 2017

Here's what we know about Mr. Joy. He was Chinese, really nice, and very good at fixing shoes. He was someone who would take you under his wing, hug you if you cried, and would never betray you even if you had hurt him very badly. He was someone who created, well, joy. You may think to yourself, He sounds great! I wish I knew him.

BWW Review: THE ARSONISTS is Incendiary at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company
by Evann Normandin - Sep 14, 2017

Do you ever feel like we're all just sitting around watching the world burn? If you would like to do that in the presence of like-minded theatre goers, then head down to Woolly Mammoth and experience the sensation that is THE ARSONISTS. Written by Max Frisch in 1958 and commonly interpreted as a metaphor for the rise of Communism and Nazism, this new translation by Alistair Beaton directed by Michael John Garc s feels frighteningly contemporary.

BWW Review: AN OCTOROON is Anything But Black and White at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company
by Evann Normandin - Jul 23, 2017

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company's stunning remount of AN OCTOROON by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by Nataki Garrett reunites the principal cast and production teams from Woolly's sold out 2016 run. Boy, did I move to DC just in time. The Washington Post declares Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company 'a national champion of the new-and frequently provocative-American play' and after laughing, crying, and thinking through Woolly's AN OCTOROON I would be hard pressed to find better descriptors. In the heart of the nation's capital, a stone's throw from The White House, AN OCTOROON is a living, breathing, vital dialogue about racial tension in America.

BWW Review: THE ORIGINALIST Provokes at Arena Stage
by Pamela Roberts - Jul 14, 2017

THE ORIGINALIST at Arena Stage introduces Antonin Scalia as "the most polarizing figure in American civic life." When a liberal Harvard Law grad ("I fall in the flaming category") clerks for the justice, she encounters both maddening combatant and sage mentor.

by Hannah Wing - Jun 26, 2017

BWW Review: HIR at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company
by Jenny Minich - May 28, 2017

HIR is the conscientious absurdist's guide to confronting 'the world order.' It's crazy watchable, like some kind of substantive, impactful, topsy-turvy sitcom. Mac's characters are flamboyant and talk very loud about all the things that our parents told us not to discuss in public. And it's wonderful!

BWW Review: SMART PEOPLE Uses Comedy to Tackle Race at Arena Stage
by Barbara Johnson - Apr 21, 2017

As topics go, you couldn't pick a more immediate one than race in America. And as cities go, Washington is an apt location for a production of Lydia R. Diamond's SMART PEOPLE. It's set during the Obama era and takes on the topic of race with biting comedy. Seema Sueko directs a new run at Arena Stage, featuring a four-person cast that is combustible and exciting to watch.

by Julie Musbach - Apr 21, 2017

Four intellectuals-a doctor, an actress, a psychologist and a neurobiologist studying the human brain's response to race-search for love, acceptance and identity in Lydia R. Diamond's comedy-drama Smart People, which makes its D.C. debut at Arena Stage. Set against the backdrop of Obama's 2008 election, Diamond's fiercely funny play explores the unavoidable nature of cultural bias. Deputy Artistic Director Seema Sueko makes her Arena Stage directorial debut with this "sexy, serious and very, very funny modern-day comedy of manners" (Variety). Smart People runs April 14-May 21, 2017 in the Kreeger Theater.

BWW Review: Thought Provoking THE ORIGINALIST Arrives at Pasadena Playhouse
by Don Grigware - Apr 17, 2017

From the moment the strains of Verdi's La Traviata were heard in the wings and Edward Gero as Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia entered through a part in the curtain pretending to conduct the orchestra in a joyously bemused state, I sensed we were in for a treat. How right I was! In and around the courtroom ... a perfect place for passion and theatrics, this is John Strand's The Originalist, a somewhat factual play set in Washington from 2012-13. The piece boasts intelligent writing, and a grande performance from Gero as Scalia, as well as great work from Jade Wheeler and Brett Mack, all of whom leave an indelible mark by making us think. You actually leave the theatre refreshed ... and somewhat hopeful about the future of our political system.

BWW Review: Moody MIDWESTERN GOTHIC Premieres at Signature Theatre
by Barbara Johnson - Apr 3, 2017

My expectations for the premiere of MIDWESTERN GOTHIC at Signature Theatre were so high that the musical itself was bound to fall short, no matter what. Billed as a darkly funny thriller, it's got atmosphere in spades and boasts laudable performances from a cast of committed actors. But that isn't enough to keep the whole affair from feeling like an interesting concept still in search of a form.
