Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre.

Despite all the evidence to the contrary, chivalry isn't dead, but it certainly has to fight to survive. As long as chivalry, kindness, and optimism are challenged, the story of Don Quixote will continue to be told. Perhaps that's one of the reasons behind Austin Playhouse's decision to open their 2013-2014 season with Man of La Mancha. Whatever the reason, the production is highly entertaining and a stunning feast for the eyes, though a couple performances could be tighter and more effective.

Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino has announced the 2014 season, in which, through the prism of a dozen plays, the Stratford Festival will explore the theme of Madness: Minds Pushed to the Edge.

Set during the Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha is a look a morals, our view of ourselves, our view of others, and the world as a whole. Three different stories intertwine and connect, giving the audience an interesting look at reality as we know it.

Due to critical acclaim and over whelming box office demand, Man of La Mancha, the beloved musical that follows the adventures of the eternally optimistic, Don Quixote, will extend its run through Sunday, July 28th at Palm Beach Dramaworks' Don & Ann Brown Theatre (201 Clematis Street). Man of La Mancha, the beloved musical that follows the adventures of the eternally optimistic, Don Quixote, launches the summer season atPalm Beach Dramaworks on Wednesday July 10 (8PM), the first of two shows to be presented in concert as part of the Musical Theatre Masters Series.
