San Francisco Symphony & Michael Tilson Thomas to Release New Recordings, 11/12

On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) and the San Francisco Symphony(SFS) will release a hybrid SACD recording and digital download of Beethoven's Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II and Symphony No. 2 on SFS Media, the Orchestra's in-house label. The recording is part of MTT & the SFS' multi-season focus on performing and recording the music of Beethoven. It features the Grammy-award winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and soloists Sally Matthews, soprano; Tamara Mumford, mezzo-soprano; Barry Banks, tenor; and Andrew Foster-Williams, bass-baritone. The performance was recorded live at Davies Symphony Hall May 2-3, 2013 during Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony's two-week festival exploring Beethoven's early inspirations. The recording of Beethoven's Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II and Symphony No. 2 can be pre-ordered on iTunes at itunes.com/sfsymphony and on SACD from the San Francisco Symphony Store at sfsymphony.org/store. The album will be available for purchase at music retailers everywhere on Tuesday, November 12. Alan Gilbert Leads the NY Phil in Britten's 100th Birthday Celebration, 11/21

Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic in a celebration of the centennial of English composer, conductor, and pianist Benjamin Britten. The program will include Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, featuring tenor Paul Appleby and Philharmonic Principal Horn Philip Myers, and Britten's Spring Symphony, with soprano Kate Royal (in her Philharmonic debut), mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke (Philharmonic subscription debut), tenor Paul Appleby, New York Choral Artists directed by Joseph Flummerfelt, and Brooklyn Youth Chorus directed by Dianne Berkun-Menaker. The concerts, which include a performance on the composer's 100th birthday, November 22, will take place Thursday, November 21, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 23 at 8:00 p.m.

Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) and the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) perform two concerts at Carnegie Hall in Stern Auditorium on Wednesday, November 13 at 8:00 pm and Thursday, November 14 at 8:00 pm. The repertoire for these concerts exhibit the breadth of MTT and the SFS's hallmark programming with performances of core repertoire by Mahler, Mozart and Beethoven, along with works by American composers Steven Mackey and Aaron Copland.

The New York Philharmonic in collaboration with CAMI Music will celebrate the Chinese New Year for the third consecutive year, welcoming the Year of the Horse with a concert featuring major works of both the Chinese and Western canon on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. The event celebrates the cultural heritage of China and America and honors the Chinese- American community. Long Yu — artistic director and chief conductor of the China Philharmonic, music director of the Shanghai and Guanzhou Symphony Orchestras, and artistic director of the Beijing Music Festival — will return to the Philharmonic to conduct the concert.

New World Symphony's New Study Confirms Success of Alternative Concerts

The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), has announced the results of the study it initiated in 2009 to determine the efficacy of alternate concert formats in building new audiences for classical music alongside audiences for traditional presentations. The results add to the body of research that informs programming decisions of classical music organizations and presenters as they address the changing demographics and lifestyles of American audiences. Of equal importance, and as an additional consequence of this study and their participation in it, the Fellows of the New World Symphony will carry the techniques and sensibilities of-and an expanded appreciation for-audience engagement with them into their professional careers.

The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), opens its 2013-2014 season this weekend, October 5 and 6 with the world premiere of a video work by artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner. The video, which accompanies the Four Sea Interludes from Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, is co-commissioned by NWS, Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony. The New World Symphony performances, which will include a WALLCAST concert on October 5, are conducted by NWS Founder and Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and feature Gershwin's Cuban Overture and Piano Concerto in F performed by renowned pianist Yuja Wang, as well as Stravinsky'sPulcinella Suite.
