Producers Fox Theatricals (Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson) and Barbara Whitman have just announced that Fun Home, the groundbreaking and Tony Award-winning Best Musical, has recouped its production costs on Broadway in only eight months, becoming the first new musical of the 2014-2015 Broadway season to do so. Capitalized at $5.25 million, Fun Home opened to rave reviews at the 740-seat Circle in the Square Theatre on April 19, 2015, where it broke house box office records and won five 2015 Tony Awards.
KINKY BOOTS star Wayne Brady surprised today's audience at BC/EFA's 27th annual GYPSY OF THE YEAR competition with guest rappers Christopher Jackson and Lin-Manuel Miranda from this season's Broadway sensation HAMILTON. The trio showed off their improvisational chops, topping each other in a rap battle based on words provided by the audience, including chicken, sarsaparilla, succubus, tsunami, scaffolding and condom. On Monday, November 30, the Theater People podcast welcomes Broadway favorite Elizabeth Stanley. She is currently headlining the first national tour of THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY in the role of Francesca. Stanley made her Broadway debut as April in the 2006 John Doyle helmed production of COMPANY. She went on to originate the role of Allison in CRY BABY, and then Dyanne in MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. Two-time Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris and singing partner Kimberly Kaye, along with their band Loose Cattle, have recorded a country version of "Pony Girl," the original song written by FUN HOME Tony Award-winners Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron for the musical. Cerveris has created his own arrangement of the song, which was cut during early workshops of Fun Home, turning the tune into a waltzing cowboy lullaby. The single, mastered for iTunes, is now available for pre-sale, and will receive an official release on November 23, 2015 at most online retailers. Cerveris and Loose Cattle will celebrate "Pony Girl" with a release party and concert at Hill Country Barbecue (1123 Broadway) on Monday, November 23 at 8:00PM.
