After producing ten Main Stage shows in ten months to celebrate its tenth anniversary season, The Onyx has settled into a more comfortable groove.

Tenor Matthew Polenzani--he of the refined singing, elegant deportment and serious nature--is having a great season at the Met, with major roles in a pair of new productions. First, he was Nadir, whose love for the priestess Leila (Diana Damrau) tempts her to give up her vows in Bizet's LES PECHEURS DE PERLES (THE PEARL FISHERS). Now he's working his mojo on no less than Elisabetta (Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen of England), in the new production of Donizetti's ROBERTO DEVEREUX at the Met, premiering March 24.

Broadway In Chicago is thrilled to announce the quintessential backstage musical comedy classic 42nd STREET will celebrate a two-week engagement at the Cadillac Palace Theatre (151 W. Randolph) with a sparkling new production, tonight, March 8, through March 20, 2016.

Although the production doesn't quite soar, LOST IN THE STARS is a welcome addition to the WNO season simply because it's not performed very frequently - at least in comparison to other more familiar works that transcend the opera-musical divide.

The 'ReGroup Reads' series is gearing up for its second year. The free reading series, based on the best of American Theatre playwriting has already presented works by Paul Green, Tennessee Williams, Lillian Hellman, Maxwell Anderson, George S. Kaufman and more in its first year.

Birdland was abuzz this past Thursday night in celebration of Barbara Fasano's fresh-off-the-press CD, Busy Being Free. Industry types table-hopped among civilians--they know a good thing when they hear it--as anticipation swelled.  Celebrated mezzo-soprano Julia Migenes (Diva on the Verge) returns to the Odyssey Theatre with her newest show, once again directed by Academy Award-nominated director Peter Medak. Julia Migenes Sings Kurt Weill opens at the Odyssey tonight, October 9.

The legendary music of Kurt Weill will fill the auditorium of the Drostdy Theatre in Stellenbosch when TYD & WEILL, which premiered at the US Woordfees in March, makes its bow there this October.

Ninety percent of the way into her ebullient show last night at Birdland, So, As I Was Saying, Anita Gillette quotes a 1977 review of her performance in Neil Simon's Chapter Two that stated the warmth she exudes could melt glaciers. (The artist wasn't bragging, but was referring to her then difficulty in finding any glaciers, i.e., men to melt.) The description applies today. A packed audience comprised both of devoted civilian fans and theatrical luminaries cheered on the latest iteration of Gillette's dramatized life. Once again directed by Barry Kleinbort with musically directed by Paul Greenwood (who also appealingly sings duets), with Ritt Henn on bass and John Redsecker on drums, the show is as sincere and bubbly as the lady herself.

Helmed by Tony Award-winning director Frank Galati, Maxwell Anderson's scintillating political satire BOTH YOUR HOUSES opens Friday, January 23, 2015 at 8pm at Asolo Rep, with previews Wednesday, January 21 and Thursday, January 22 at 8pm. The play runs in rotating rep through Sunday, April 12, 2015. The title of this smart production derives from Mercutio's famous line in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet: "a plague on both your houses."
