BWW Reviews: The Rep's Sublime HARVEY Celebrates Holiday Spirit

Mysterious circumstances and the inexplicable spirit of a six feet tall white rabbit revisit the Milwaukee Repertory Theater's exquisite 70th anniversary production of Harvey. Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winning tale of Ellwood P. Dowd, a man who imagines the rabbit named Harvery is his best friend, unfolds on an elegant double turntable stage designed by Dan Conroy, a sight to delight any audience. The eloquent production humorously explores on a complex level what makes life worth living. Perhaps Ellwood's own words succinctly crystallize that premise: 'You must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant. For years I was smart, and than I chose pleasant.'

Maureen Lipman to Join UK's HARVEY, February 6

Maureen Lipman will be joining James Dreyfus in Lindsay Posner's new production of Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy HARVEY, which will open at Birmingham Repertory Theatre on 6 February, running until 21 February, prior to a UK Tour and the West End. Maureen Lipman will be playing Veta, who tries to get her brother, Elwood P. Dowd played by James Dreyfus, committed rather than risk the family's reputation.

According to the Daily Mail, James Dreyfus will play 'Elwood P. Dowd' in HARVEY at Birmingham Repertory Theatre next year before the show launches a UK tour to Richmond, Bromley and Malvern. Mary Chase's play (which recently appeared on Broadway starring Jim Parsons) is being produced by Don Gregory, who told the Mail he plans on transferring the production to the West End.

After six consecutive years, Disney's Beauty and the Beast has relinquished its place as the top musical in the annual survey of most-produced titles in United States high school theatres, unseated during the 2013-14 season by another adaptation of an animated anti-hero: Shrek the Musical. Returning to the list, and rounding out the top three, is Godspell, which has seen its popularity rise after a recent Broadway revival and subsequent national tour.
