OCTA is ready to sail into its new season on the wings of the musical spoof, Ruthless! Audiences can catch all the absurd fun of 'the stage mother of all musicals' September 15-October 1.
Upon arriving at Gettysburg Community Theatre to see their currently running show, RUTHLESS!, I was struck by the esthetic quality of the theatre and its majestic grandeur married with the hospitality of a well-connected community atmosphere.
Gettysburg Community Theatre, the non-profit 501c3 organization located in the original Elks Lodge building at 49 York Street within the first block of Lincoln Square in historic downtown Gettysburg, will present "Ruthless! The Musical" - the show that proves when it comes to show business, the key to success is ruthlessness. The book and lyrics are written by Joel Paley with music by Marvin Laird.

The McCallum Theatre presents Bernadette Peters, with Musical Director Marvin Laird, on Saturday, February 4, at 8:00pm. Tony Award-winning actress Bernadette Peters dazzles audiences and critics with her performances on stage and television, in concert and in movies, and on recordings. Bernadette currently stars in Amazon Prime's Golden Globe nominated series, "Mozart in the Jungle." Recent stage credits include City Center's Encores! Production A Bed A Chair: A New York Love Affair. Prior to that, she starred on Broadway in the Stephen Sondheim/James Goldman production of Follies, following a successful run at the Kennedy Center. She also starred opposite Elaine Stritch in A Little Night Music.
"Dying is easy, comedy is hard". The old adage has been attributed to countless comedians over the years. When a musical comedy attempts to combine comedy and death, the outcome can either be successful (think Monty Python) or fall on its face. Ruthless! The Musical, a 1992 off Broadway campy musical, which opened this week at Creative Cauldron in Falls Church, falls into the latter category. The intermission-less show written by Marvin Laird and Joel Paley has funny bits, and a few memorable songs, but overall the piece, which has had a successful life in regional theater, is just flat. Sure, it spoofs musicals like Gypsy and movies like All About Eve, but the humor is a bit rudimentary and plays more like a bad SNL skit, then a well-polished farce.
