BWW Special Report: PIPPIN's Motown Magic Returns to Broadway
by Kevin Winkler
- Apr 3, 2013
As an undergraduate theater major in the early 1970s, I heard music everywhere. It seemed to pour out of every office and workspace around the department. (And in the LP era, if you wanted more than the radio, this meant schlepping a twenty pound record player and a dozen or so albums from your home to the campus, sometimes requiring back-and-forth trips from the car. If you go to that much trouble, you want to keep the music playing.) In the hushed costume shop with its quietly industrious all female staff, Broadway ruled, with Stephen Sondheim's recent Company and Follies in heavy rotation. It was 'men only' in the scene shop where I listened to male balladeers like James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot while unhappily working off assigned crew hours. Jazz classes (my favorites) in the dance department were conducted to the pre-disco sounds of Isaac Hayes and the Temptations. And late night cast parties were never complete without spins of Bette Midler's first two albums.

SOUND OFF: GLEE Says 'I Do'... With COMPANY, Too!
by Pat Cerasaro
- Feb 15, 2013
On the fourteenth episode of the fourth season of FOX's hit musical comedy series Glee - airing on February 14, no less - Valentine's Day got its grand due, McKinley High-style, once again with 'I Do', written by co-creators Ian Brennan and directed by Brad Falchuk. Complete with heartwarming twists, heart-stopping turns and heartfelt musical numbers for us to remember long after the bonbons have Disappeared and the tea-lights have burned out in the morning-after haze, it was a theme show supreme. Plus, how about the Glee cast in a COMPANY movie musical someday, at least if last night's tribute was any indication of what could be. After all, if Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) isn't a born-to-be Joanne in the tradition of uncompromising divas like Elaine Stritch and Patti LuPone, then who is?!

Finn tells Rachel about kissing Emma and despite what he hopes to be a good conversation turns into a awkwardness when he can't seem to get over her new relationship with Brody. Emma is fraying at the ends as Finn tries to confront her, but she's not having it because she has pressing matters to deal with involving the wedding to deal with the situation at hand. Will returns and informs the Glee club he wants them to perform at his wedding, and in place of a best man speech, Will wants Finn to sing - freaking him out even more. What does Finn Hudson do when he freaks out? Turns to Rachel Berry? You bet! With Rachel's help, the best man song is now a duet between the two, and is that sparks I see flying?
Marley gives Jake a gift for Valentine's Day, but Jake is not even remotely ready for Valentine's Day. With help from Ryder, Jake presents Marley with 'All I Need to Get By' by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Emma pairs Artie up with her handicap able niece named Betty, which Artie seems pleased about.
