Jack E. Curenton and Jessica Norland Set to Lead MAN OF LA MANCHA National Tour; Kicks Off 1/4 in Idaho Falls

Man Of La Mancha returns to the stage in an all-new production of the Tony Award winning musical that has inspired audiences since the very first notes of "The Impossible Dream" were heard on opening night. Performances begin January 4th in Idaho Falls; subsequent tour stops include Yakima, WA, Kennewick, WA, Cerritos, CA, Austin, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Alto, NM, Prescott, AZ, Palm Desert, CA, Avon, CO, Riverside, CA, Ft. Smith, AR, Cape Girardeau, MO, Topeka, KS, St. Louis, MO, Gainesville, FL, Providence, RI, Richmond, KY, Sarasota, FL, Ft. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 12/5- MAN OF LA MANCHA

Today in 2002, the fourth Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 304 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre.

BWW Reviews: A.R. Gurney In THE GRAND MANNER at the Good Theater

The Good Theater's (Portland, ME) New England premiere of A.R. Gurney's latest play, The Grand Manner, is a wistful, droll, and stylish production of this charming, nostalgic paean to theatre on the Great White Way in 1948. The play, which originally opened at New York's Lincoln Center Theatre in 2010, deals with an autobiographical episode, augmented into legend.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 11/12- GRAND HOTEL

Today in 1989, Grand Hotel opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre) where it ran for 1017 performances. Grand Hotel is a musical with a book by Luther Davis and music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest, with additional lyrics and music by Maury Yeston. Based on the 1929 Vicki Baum novel and play, Menschen im Hotel (People in a Hotel), and the subsequent 1932 MGM feature film, the musical focuses on events taking place over the course of a weekend in an elegant hotel in 1928 Berlin and the intersecting stories of the eccentric guests of the hotel, including a fading prima ballerina; a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper, who wants to spend his final days living in luxury; a young, handsome, but destitute Baron; a cynical doctor; and a typist dreaming of Hollywood success.

NYU Steinhardt Presents SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, Now thru 9/14

'Sweet Smell of Success', presented by NYU Steinhardt's Program in Vocal Performance, will run tonight, Sept. 12-14, and features music by Tony, Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Pulitzer Prize winner Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by three-time Tony Award nominee Craig Carnelia, and book by Tony Award winner John Guare. Steinhardt's own John Simpkins directs.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 9/3- INTO THE WOODS

Today in 1989, Into the Woods closed at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 765 performances. Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason), in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera.

Today in 1965, Oliver! opened at the Martin Beck Theatre, where it ran for 64 performances. Oliver! is a British musical, with script, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. The musical is based upon the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. It premiered in the West End in 1960, enjoying a long run, a successful Broadway production in 1963 and further tours and revivals. It was made into a musical film in 1968. Major London revivals played from 1994-1998 and again from 2009-2011.

(UMC), in a collaboration with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, has released a recording of three songs from the little-known 1947 musical comedy Barefoot Boy With Cheek featuring performances by Jenn Colella (Chaplin, Closer Than Ever), Max von Essen (Evita, Death Takes a Holiday) and Robert Lenzi (South Pacific, Hello Again).

Jamie Nichols, Mark Lyminsteras & More Join 2013 UK Tour of HOUDINI; Full Cast Announced!

Casting is announced today for the brand new, dramatic play 'HOUDINI' which premieres at Stoke Repertory Theatre on September 9th before embarking on a UK tour. 'Houdini' writer and BAFTA Award winning actor Stuart Brennan who plays Theo, Harry Houdini's brother, and Evanna Lynch, ex-Harry Potter alumni, who plays Bess, Harry's wife, are joined by Jamie Nichols as Harry Houdini, Mark Lyminsteras actor and promoter Martin Beck, and Ion Patrick Ridge as Douglas Geoffrey.

UMC's recordings will be released for free digital download on the New York Public Library's website as part of its Musical of the Month blog series, which recently featured UMC's reconstruction of the Barefoot Boy libretto. The musical has never received a cast album.

Evanna Lynch and Stuart Brennan to Star in 2013 UK Tour of HOUDINI?

According to WildAboutHoudini.com, Evanna Lynch (Harry Potter films) and Stuart Brennan will likely star in the upcoming UK tour of Houdini. The show is set to make its World Premiere on September 9, 2013 at the Stoke-on-Trent Repertory Theatre, produced by Theatre Giant.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 4/14- GUYS AND DOLLS

Today in 1992, the second Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 1143 performances. Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on 'The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown' and 'Blood Pressure', two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories, most notably 'Pick the Winner'. Premiering on Broadway in 1950, the original production ran for 1200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway and London revivals, as well as a 1955 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 4/6- THE CRUCIBLE

Today in 1964, The Crucible opened at the Belasco Theatre, where it ran for 16 performances. The Crucible is a 1952 play by the American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a dramatization of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay during 1692 and 1693. It was first performed at the Martin Beck Theater on Broadway on January 22, 1953. The production won the 1953 'Best Play' Tony Award. It is a central work in the canon of American drama.
