Dances for a Variable Population Presents THE PHOENIX PROJECT, Today

 Celebrating dance and the beauty of age, Dances For a Variable Population (DVP), will present three performances of The Phoenix Project, a citywide public dance project that empowers older adults and reevaluates the aesthetics of aging. This world premiere collaboration will take place in three boroughs-Bronx, Queens and Harlem-over three Todays, June 4, 11 and 13. The Phoenix Project will make its Bronx debut at the New York Botanical Garden's award-winning and picturesque Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden on June 4. In the subsequent weekends, the piece will move with excerpts of the full work to Queens at the Queensbridge Riis Senior Center on June 11, and close their performances as part of the Summer on the Hudson Festival at the West Harlem Piers Park on June 18 as part of a Family Day event.

Four venerable American dance companies are joining forces with Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts (www.usdan.org), just in time for the 2016 summer camp season. Announced today, the troupes -The Ailey Organization, American Ballet Theatre (ABT), Martha Graham, and Pilobolus-- are officially on the Camp's proverbial dance card, further strengthening Usdan's notable offerings for campers from ages four through 18.

I longed to see more. One would love to see the Martha Graham Dance Company commission a new from Ms. Zall. Unlike their usual fare, she clearly understands stagecraft and is able to communicate in the language of their founder. It seems to me that all she needs is the opportunity. Denise Vale, the Graham company's Artistic Associate was in the audience. Perhaps she will communicate what a boon it would be to work with Ms. Zall to her colleagues.

Jacqulyn Buglisi Stages TABLE OF SILENCE at University of California Santa Barbara on 5/23

Jacqulyn Buglisi is honored to stage her 'Table of Silence' on 75 dance majors at the University of California, Santa Barbara, May 23 from 12 noon to 1 PM on the second anniversary of the Isla Vista tragedy, in which six UCSB students were killed.  The commemoration will be an opportunity for the campus community to join together to honor the students lost, in a message of hope, peace and healing. Choreographer Buglisi and UCSB express their deep appreciation to John Arnhold, an alumnus of UCSB and major supporter of the arts, for making this moving event possible.  UCSB musicians will accompany the dancers; the mantels and ceramic plates used in 'Table of Silence', performed annually at New York's Lincoln Center since 2011, will be provided by the New York City-based Buglisi Dance Theatre. The commemoration will be streamed live at www.live.id.ucsb.edu  

League of American Orchestras Explores Diversity in National Conference in Baltimore, 6/9-11

The League of American Orchestras' 2016 National Conference in Baltimore, June 9-11, will focus on orchestra diversity and inclusion, offering expert speakers from within the field and beyond, as well as a series of plenary and elective sessions on diversifying orchestra musicians, boards of directors, audiences, and the workplace. The Conference will welcome orchestra managers, musicians, staff, trustees, and volunteers from across the U.S.; it is the first League Conference to take place in Baltimore. 

Graham 2 Sets 2016 New York Season

Graham 2's 2016 New York season opens on June 2 with a special benefit performance honoring renowned choreographer and Graham Company alumna Patricia Birch. The opening night program will feature a film by Nancy Stevens, Graham's Maple Leaf Rag, the Puritan Duet from American Document, the premiere of Cyclical Journey by Virginie Mécène, and a special restaged sequence from Grease by Birch. The season also includes Lament from Acts of Light, excerpts from Night Journey and Plain of Prayer, and a duet by guest choreographer Amanda Kreglow.

SMU Meadows Dance Ensemble to Perform APPALACHIAN SPRING with New Version of Copland's Score
