Playwrights Horizons presents Rancho Viejo, the world premiere of a new play by Dan LeFranc (The Big Meal at Playwrights, Sixty Miles to Silver Lake, In the Labyrinth) and directed by three-time Obie Award winner Daniel Aukin (Placebo, This at Playwrights; Fool For Love; Bad Jews; 4000 Miles; [sic]). The production opened on December 6 at the company's Mainstage Theater (416 West 42nd Street) and will play through Friday, December 23. The Huntington Theatre Company presents the iconic classic drama A Doll's House, by Henrik Ibsen, adapted by Bryony Lavery, and directed by Boston favorite Melia Bensussen (Awake and Sing!, Luck of the Irish, and Circle Mirror Transformation at the Huntington). Performances run January 6 - February 5, 2017 at the Avenue of the Arts / BU Theatre.

Playwrights Horizons' A Life, the world premiere of a new play by Obie Award winner Adam Bock (A Small Fire and The Drunken City at Playwrights, The Receptionist, The Thugs, Swimming in the Shallows), just opened at the company's Peter Jay Sharp Theater (416 West 42nd Street). Originally scheduled to play a limited engagement through Sunday, November 13, the production will now play through Sunday, November 27.

The tensest, most dramatic moments in director Anne Kauffman's premiere production of Adam Bock's A Life occur whenever designer Laura Jellinek's large unit set slowly rotates horizontally, like a rotisserie, to change locations. The loud extended creaking that accompanies every change sounds like something is about to snap and make the whole thing collapse.

On May 2nd, The 52nd Street Project held their annual benefit, LAUGHING MATTERS, Kids' Stand-up, Adults Deliver at the Edison Ballroom in New York. The raucous sold-out event hosted by comedians Lewis Black and Kathleen Madigan, was The Project's most successful to date with over 350 people in attendance, raising funds for the Project's academic and artistic mentoring programming. The Project makes a difference in the lives of Hell's Kitchen (Clinton) kids by pairing them with theater professionals who mentor them through the creation of original theater. Sundance Institute today announced the acting company, dramaturgs and creative advisors participating in its pilot Theatre Lab in the MENA region, including Sandra Oh, Hoon Lee, Deanna Dunagan, Hala Omran and Raeda Taha. The Lab, held in Morocco next month, is part of the Institute's international cultural exchange programs for independent artists and will kick off a new, multi-year commitment to support artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). For the Lab, the Institute will provide promising, fresh voices from the U.S. and MENA region with a rigorous artistic retreat and new opportunities for cross-cultural discovery, artistic reflection and creative experimentation.
