Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute (WMI) kicks off the 2013-2014 season with live performances at community venues throughout the five boroughs of New York City with its free Neighborhood Concerts. For almost four decades, Carnegie Hall has presented an outstanding series of concerts featuring top notch artists across multiple genres including jazz, world music, classical, and more. In addition, WMI presents a number of free family-friendly programs throughout New York City as part of the Carnegie Kids series.

James Gaffigan to Conduct Academy Festival Orchestra's Season Finale Today

James Gaffigan, whose dazzling performances on many of the world's marquee stages have prompted critics to declare him the most talented young American conductor working today, leads the Academy Festival Orchestra in its final concert of the 2013 Summer Festival season at Santa Barbara's historic Granada Theatre today, August 10. Featuring a program of grand Romantic works punctuating this year's Festival theme of 'Magic, Legend, and Ritual' - including the overture to Wagner's Rienzi, songs from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique - the concert will begin at 8 pm. Tickets start at $15.

Carol Burnett, America's beloved comedienne, is teaming up with legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne at the Music Academy of the West this month for coaching sessions with the young vocalists who will headline this year's Cabaret gala on August 8, which benefits the Music Academy's full-scholarship program. Ms. Burnett, as the Academy's Cabaret Creative Contributor, and Ms. Horne, Voice Program Director, will instruct Music Academy Voice Fellows in the art of musical comedy, both in private classes and individually. The renowned Summer School and Festival, now in its 66th season, runs through August 10 in scenic Santa Barbara.

The Music Academy of the West will present a fully staged production of Mozart's timeless operatic masterpiece The Magic Flute - Santa Barbara's first in 15 years - at the Granada Theatre tonight, August 2, and Sunday, August 4. Performances will take place at 7:30 pm tonight, August 2 and at 2:30 pm on August 4.

Baritone John Brancy and pianist Mario Antonio Marra have been named winners of the 2013 Music Academy of the West Marilyn Horne Song Competition, which took place July 20 at the Music Academy's Hahn Hall. Messrs. Brancy and Marra will each receive a cash award of $2,500, and will be presented in recital next year at Hahn Hall, Santa Monica's Broad Stage, and the National Opera Center in New York City. Tenor Andrew Haji was the recipient of an Encouragement Award. Biographies appear below.

The Metropolitan Opera will celebrate its longtime Music Director James Levine's 70th birthday with two full days of special programming on Met Opera Radio (Sirius XM Channel 74). The weekend-long marathon will feature 14 classic Levine performances, hand-picked by the maestro himself, beginning on Saturday, June 22 and continuing through midnight on Levine's birthday, Sunday, June 23. The first broadcast, at 6 a.m. Saturday, will be a 1991 performance of Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera starring Luciano Pavarotti; the celebration will conclude at 12 a.m. on Monday, June 24 with a 1994 performance of Verdi's rarely heard Stiffelio, starring Placido Domingo in the title role. Complete details, including complete casting and original broadcast dates for all 14 performances, are below.
