San Francisco Ballet has announced its 2024 season filled with premieres, company firsts, and works rarely seen in the United States.

The star-crossed story of Romeo and Juliet has certainly kept is relevance in the 426 years since William Shakespeare premiered his enduring play. Endlessly reinterpreted on stage, screen and song ever since, its leading interpretation through dance came in the mid-20th century ballet from Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, whose other famed works included the ballet for 'Cinderella' and 'Peter and the Wolf.'

Following a milestone anniversary year, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival will celebrate its 91st season this summer.

Quite why there aren’t more boundary-pushing, avant-garde, drag-slash-dance troupes around that appropriate film, TV and music to bring us satirically twisted versions of real-life and fictional historical figures, I really have no idea. So let’s treasure the ones that are around, eh?

This New Year, the Royal Opera House will add six new performances to Royal Opera House Stream for audiences around the world to enjoy: The Cellist, Romeo and Juliet and Sylvia from The Royal Ballet; and La traviata, Fidelio and Madama Butterfly from The Royal Opera.

This season, The Royal Ballet's signature production of The Sleeping Beauty returns to the Royal Opera House.

After the tragic loss of the Doris Duke Theatre to a fire in November 2020, Jacob’s Pillow has announced that the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has awarded a $10 million grant —the largest received in Jacob’s Pillow’s 90-year history—toward the building of a new, reimagined Doris Duke Theatre, slated to open in 2025.

London International Mime Festival (LIMF), the UK's annual festival of contemporary visual theatre, opens on Monday 16 January and runs until Sunday 5 February 2023 with 15 productions including 8 international works in 8 London venues: Barbican Theatre & The Pit, Jacksons Lane, Little AngelTheatre, Shoreditch Town Hall, Peacock Theatre, The Place and Wilton's Music Hall. 

Limón Dance Company will celebrate part of its 75th anniversary season at the Pillow in the fifth week of Festival 2022 from July 20-24. The program will feature works by Limón, Doris Humphrey, and Olivier Taparga. In addition, Music From The Sole will perform tap's afro-diasporic roots on the Henry J. Leir stage from Wednesday through Sunday.

In the third week of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival 2022, audiences in the Ted Shawn Theatre will be treated to live music and the best of the swing dance world in SW!NG OUT. Also in Week 3, JazzAntiqua Dance & Music Ensemble, Prakriti Dance, Bill Shannon, and The New York Korean Performing Arts Center will take to the outdoor Henry J. Leir Stage.

Ronald K. Brown / EVIDENCE will return to Jacob’s Pillow in Week 2 of the Dance Festival this year from June 29-July 3. The company will perform several works, including the world premiere of The Equality of Night and Day, with noted jazz composer Jason Moran playing live for each performance.

Judged by director Jatinder Verma, National Theatre archivist Erin Lee and theatre critic Paul Vale on a panel chaired by STR Committee Member Howard Loxton, the shortlist includes six titles ranging from the history of Sheffield's Crucible Theatre to the candid account of the early career of actress Eileen Atkins.

Miami City Ballet (MCB) will present its second program of the season, George Balanchine's sparkling Jewels. A crowning jewel in the Balanchine canon, the ballet is inspired by a visit to famed French jewelers Van Cleef & Arpels.

Since its premiere in 1965, danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, it has remained a firm favourite of The Royal Ballet’s repertory, offering dancers in the lead roles a wealth of opportunity for differing interpretations of the star-crossed lovers.  

Today, the Royal Opera House has announced that, in addition to both The Dante Project and Giselle, a further five productions will be released on select dates from New Year's Eve, offering audiences across the globe a rich range of ballet and opera this New Year.  

Following critically acclaimed performances in October 2021, Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet returns for a second run in the new year, with performances beginning on Monday 10 January 2022.  

This October The Royal Ballet returns for its first full Season in 18 months with a Season featuring world premieres of Wayne McGregor’s The Dante Project, Christopher Wheeldon’s Like Water for Chocolate, a new work by Kyle Abraham as well as classics including Giselle, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.
