Is there any better place to celebrate the Fourth of July than the Nation's Capital? If you're in town for the fireworks and concert on the Mall, consider popping into one of our local theatres. This month's MUST-SEES include The Capital Fringe Festival and Hip-Hop Festival, pirates, a high-flying nanny, a supreme trio, a boar with a flapjack, a crazy one-man Lord of the Rings, those loveable Tony Award-winning puppets, lots of plaid, a household of singing sisters, Stew's 'strange' score, and a concert version of a Rodgers and Hart classic musical. There's something for everyone in July on our DC area stages.

Marriott Theatre continues their smash hit 35th Anniversary Season with the exhilarating Broadway musical Once on this Island. The production previews June 30, opening July 7 and runs through August 29 at 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire, IL. The production will be Directed and Choreographed by Jeff Award winner David H. Bell, and will star Chasten Harmon as Ti Moune.

On July 4, the Boston Pops will release a CD featuring the live recording of the world premiere performances of The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers, which took place at Symphony Hall May 18 & 19 with guest narrators Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Cherry Jones, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, under the direction of Keith Lockhart.

First, let me admit, I adore the music of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. My introduction to them began at the Olney Theatre Center with their musical farce Lucky Stiff over twenty years ago. Then there was the incredible Broadway hit Once on this Island, My Favorite Year, the mega musical Ragtime, followed by the poignant A Man of No Importance and the challenging Dessa Rose, and in 2007, The Glorious Ones.

The season opens with The Second City's 50th Anniversary Revue (June 16-20) and continues with popular productions by Bohemian Theatre Ensemble (June 23-27), A Red Orchid Theatre (June 30-July 4), Baby Wants Candy (July 7-11), Strawdog Theatre Company (July 14-18), Rivendell Theatre Company (July 21-25), The Gift Theatre Company (July 28 - Aug. 1), and Caffeine Theatre (Aug. 4-8).

Theatre Hopkins will open its final production of the season, the Maryland premiere of the musical comedy, 'The Glorious Ones' on Friday, June 11, at the Swirnow Theater in the Mattin Center on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. The score and book are by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who received the Tony Award for their musical 'Ragtime.' The production is directed and choreographed by Todd Pearthree.
