Contra Costa County's only professional orchestra, California Symphony, presents the second regular concert of its 25th Anniversary Season, the Romance of the Cello, featuring world-renowned cellist and classical music "rock star" Joshua Roman. Internationally renowned conductor Robert Moody will lead this performance, featuring Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto, and Sergei Rachmaninoff's towering Symphony No. 2. The Romance of the Cello will take place at 4 pm Sunday, January 22, 2012at the Lesher Center for the Arts (1601 Civic Center Drive, Walnut Creek). Russian-born Vasily Petrenko, the youngest Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, comes to the Hollywood Bowl in two programs of classical concerts, Tuesday, July 26, and Thursday, July 28, at 8 p.m. He is joined in the Tuesday program by Russian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk, who made his Bowl debut last summer; this time performing Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto. The program includes Antonín Dvo?ák's Carnival Overture and also includes Jean Sibelius' Second Symphony. Thursday's program features LA Phil Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour perfoming Sibelius' Violin Concerto. Also on the Thursday program are Dvo?ák's masterpiece, Symphony No. 9, 'From the New World,' and Mikhail Glinka's Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla.

Bed and Sofa, a ‘silent movie musical', is to receive its European Première at the multi-award-winning Finborough Theatre, with a cast led by Kaisa Hammurland and featuring the voice of Penelope Keith. With music by Polly Pen and libretto by Laurence Klavan, it will play from 29 th March - 23rd April as part of 'In Their Place', a three month season of work by women playwrights and composers.

The three-week festival - one of several initiatives launched during Alan Gilbert's first season as Music Director - will offer an in-depth look at Stravinsky, exploring how his Russian roots informed his works. South Ark Stage (Rhoda Herrick, Producing Artistic Director) has announced that it will present the world premiere of the new chamber musical The Black Monk, with book, lyrics and music by Wendy Kesselman. Under the direction of Kevin Newbury, the four-member cast features Austin Pendleton as the Monk, Scott Robertson as Igor, Elon Rutberg as Andrei, and Sarah Ziegler as Tanya.
