African-American Shakespeare Company Presents CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, 1/26-2/17

San Francisco's African-American Shakespeare Company continues its 2012-13 season with Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning play CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. African-American Shakespeare Company Artistic Director L. Peter Callender (A Raisin in the Sun, Twelfth Night) helms this scintillating interpretation of Williams's timeless play. Called 'an indestructible American classic' by Variety, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF plays January 26 through February 17 (press opening: January 26) at the Buriel Clay Theater at the African American Art and Culture Complex in San Francisco.

Aurora Theatre Company Announces 8th Annual Global Age Project Finalists

Berkeley's acclaimed Aurora Theatre Company, along with GAP Producer M. Graham Smith and GAP Associate Producer Deborah Taylor, announces the four plays chosen as finalists by a committee of local directors for the eighth annual Global Age Project (GAP), the company's new works initiative that promotes the creation of forward-looking theater. The selected GAP plays will be presented as staged readings in a four-week festival at the Aurora Theatre, Mondays, February 4-25 at 7:30PM.

Huntington Theatre Company will hold a by-invitation-only Breaking Ground developmental reading of (Shoe) Shine Safari by Huntington Playwriting Fellow John Oluwole ADEkoje (Cry Baby Jones) on Tuesday, December 11 at 7:30pm at the Huntington's Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA. Niegel Smith (Neighbors at The Public Theater) directs a cast that includes: Stephen Tyrone Williams as Shoe Shine; Johnny Lee Davenport (Vengeance is the Lord's and the upcoming Invisible Man at the Huntington) as Driver/Father; Robert D. Murphy as Lincoln Douglas; Joniece Abbott-Pratt (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom at the Huntington) as Amina; Reg Cathey as General Butt Naked/Big House/Rebel 1; James Milford as Rebel 2; and others.

CENTERSTAGE's Upcoming Raisin Cycle Honored with NEA Grant and Edgerton Award

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman announced Wednesday that CENTERSTAGE is one of 832 non-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant for its Spring 2013 Raisin Cycle. The announcement comes on the heels of CENTERSTAGE Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah's own Beneatha's Place, penned for the Cycle, receiving the Edgerton New American Play Award.

Thousands of Students and Teachers to Visit Westport Country Playhouse's A RAISIN IN THE SUN

Over 3,300 students and teachers from schools across Connecticut, as well as New York City and Springfield, Massachusetts, will see Lorraine Hansberry's landmark drama, "A Raisin in the Sun," directed by Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad at Westport Country Playhouse, during a series of six sold-out student matinee performances from Tuesday, October 23 through Friday, November 2. Students range from grades five through 12. As part of the Playhouse's commitment to make live theater more accessible to young people, one-quarter of the seats in the theater for every student matinee have been made available to schools that need assistance in bringing their students to the Playhouse.
