BWW Review: INDECENT at Victory Gardens Theater

Victory Gardens Theater's Chicago premiere of Paula Vogel's Tony nominated INDECENT weaves a beautiful narrative about the transcendence of art and human resilience. Director Gary Griffin's staging feels both grandiose and intimate at the same time; the play's action spans a time period from 1906-1950 and travels across continents, but the vignettes contained in Vogel's story are rife with genuine, powerful human emotion. INDECENT was inspired by the true story of the 1923 Broadway debut of Jewish playwright Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance, which had an illicit lesbian romance as one of its main plot points. Vogel's story charts God of Vengeance's journey from the moment Asch first presents the script to his wife through to its first reading and multiple staged productions.

BWW Review: INDECENT at the Guthrie

INDECENT is a play about a play: Sholom Asch's GOD OF VENGEANCE, first performed in 1907 in Berlin, then widely across Europe, and eventually in 1923 in New York. There it was censored and the acting troupe was arrested and jailed. It's also about how writers work, about forbidden love, about family, about being an immigrant to the US who speaks with an accent, about Yiddish theater and changing tastes on Broadway, about McCarthyism, and, yes, about the Holocaust.

JOHNNY AND THE DEVIL'S BOX Comes to Rockwood

Johnny, a young fiddler from the mountains, must contend with a death in the family, the threat of the law, a hijacked fiddle contest and the loss of his true love on his way to becoming the greatest fiddle player anyone has ever seen. But how will he fare against the greatest threat of them all, the Devil himself? Inspired by the myths of fiddlers' dealing with the Devil, the piece takes a hard look at the association between a virtuoso's egotism and hellish temptation. Written by Douglas Waterbury-Tieman with direction by John Hurley, choreography by Jennifer Jancuska, music supervision by Scott Wasserman and music assistant direction by Matt Cusack.

Jewish Music Forum Presents THE MUSIC OF INDECENT: An Evening with the Composers of the Original Score

Indecent, the 2017 Tony Award winning Broadway play, is inspired by the captivating true story surrounding Sholem Asch's God of Vengence. Recounting the Broadway debut of Asch's play in 1923 and the subsequent arrest of the entire cast on charges of indecency, Indecent tells a broader story about Jewish immigration to America, same-sex romance, censorship, and xenophobia that remains hauntingly relevant today.
