On March 31, 300 friends, artists and supporters gathered to celebrate and honor Soho Rep.'s Board Chair Jon Dembrow at their annual spring gala. Forty-five minutes into the evening, the beam supporting a second-story balcony at the event venue, Angel Orensanz Center, cracked. The building was deemed unsafe and all the guests were evacuated by the FDNY. Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre kicks off its 44th season with 'The Ed Bullins Project' - two revivals from his 'Twentieth Century Cycle of Plays' - In The Wine Time and The Fabulous Miss Marie. Bullins, winner of the prestigious NY Drama Critics' Circle Award and OBIE Award for The Taking of Miss Janie, has greatly influenced American theatre, especially Black theatre. His work, characterized by disdain for ineffective political rhetoric as a substitute for action, most often examines the lives of Black people in the inner city. In 1968, Clive Barnes, writing in the New York Times called Bullins 'a welcome addition to the ranks of New York playwrights.' Four years later, Barnes added 'Bullins writes the way Charlie Parker played: It is all so easy and effortless. It sounds improvised, and yet it doesn't sound improvised, simply because it is the improvisation of formality.' Today, Bullins is regarded as a seminal force in the American theater.
The critically acclaimed revival of Horton Foote's American masterpiece, THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, will host a special free talkback following the performance on Tuesday, September 17 with acclaimed news anchor Dan Rather. New York Times reporter Wilborn Hampton will interview Mr. Rather about his friendship with playwright Horton Foote and their shared hometown of Wharton, TX the real life Bountiful. All ticket holders for the evening performance on September 17th are invited to stay for the talkback.
According to a source within the production, the Obama ladies slipped into their seats just prior to the beginning of the show, though received a 'huge ovation' when they returned at intermission for the second act. After the curtain call, the Obamas went backstage and met the cast and crew, including Cuba Gooding, Jr., Vanessa Williams, and Tyson.
