HAMILTON creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has a dream that one day we'll be listening to showtunes on the radio again. He explained in a recent interview with Rolling Stone: 'You used to hear a Cole Porter song on the radio and then you'd go pay for a ticket to a Broadway show to hear that song in a show. If any cast album could afford to push the limit of that, it's this one.'
Just last night, the American Theatre Wing hosted its annual Gala at The Plaza Hotel (Fifth Avenue at Central Park South), honoring legendary actor James Earl Jones. Mr. Jones is a two-time Tony Award winner, two-time Obie Award winner and alumnus of the American Theatre Wing Professional School. CeCe Black, Anki Leeds, and Marva Smalls will serve as Gala Chairs.
Broadway fans celebrated the 29th Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction by bidding on and buying everything from tickets to a bevy of opening night performances to custom-made music mixes, from autographed musical phrases to once-in-a-lifetime theatrical experiences. The result: a record $756,655 was raised for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Dubbed New York City's first outdoor music festival, Elsie Fest celebrated tunes from the stage and screen just yesterday at JBL Live at Pier 97 (57th St and WestSide Highway in New York City). Ars Nova presents THE ARS NOVA REVOLUTION, celebrating Ars Nova All Stars Jill Furman, Thomas Kail and Lin-Manuel Miranda, from Freestyle Love Supreme (Ars Nova, 2004) to HAMILTON (Broadway, 2015). Their faculty members are some of the communities most prominent and successful performers; such as Nick Adams, Tituss Burgess, Norm Lewis, Leslie Odom Jr., Nicholas Rodriguez, Morgan James, Stafford Arima, Nicole Parker, Spencer Liff, Taye Diggs, and the list goes on. On October 2, Wesleyan University will host a sold-out benefit performance of the much celebrated musical Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Alumni Lin-Manuel Miranda '02, Hamilton star and creator of the book, music, and lyrics, and director Thomas Kail '99, are giving back to the university that helped launch their theater careers. The two previously collaborated on the hit musical In the Heights, of which Miranda wrote early versions while a student at Wesleyan.
