The show's final performance was unique in that the current cast of Billys (and Michaels) alternated scenes in the show. Northern Stage and Live Theatre in Newcastle Upon Tyne are thrilled to announce that they are joining forces to revive Alan Plater's play CLOSE THE COALHOUSE DOOR as a memorial production following his death in 2010. Directed by Samuel West, the production will open at Northern Stage on Wednesday 18 April, with previews from 13 April and will then tour the UK until June.
According to the New York Times, Tony winner Elton John will pen his first book, titled 'Love is the Cure: Ending the Global Aids Epidemic.' Publisher Little, Brown & Company told NYT that the book will include 'the very personal stories of Sir Elton's life during the AIDS epidemic, including his agony at seeing friend after friend perish needlessly.' A release date has not yet been announced.

CLOSE THE COALHOUSE DOOR will tour the country whilst THE PITMEN PAINTERS, another Live Theatre production set in the mining community, continues to enjoy huge success in the West End. Writer Lee Hall, (best-known for his global smash hit musical Billy Elliot) has been commissioned to revisit the piece with a new ending and a new song to bring it up to date, especially as the play was written before the critical 1984 - 5 miners' strike.

The 2009 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical, will play its final performance on Broadway today at the Imperial Theatre (246 West 45th Street). The show that Time Magazine called 'the best musical of the decade,' Billy Elliot will have played 40 preview and 1,304 regular performances. The production recouped its $18 million investment in only 14 months over 492 performances and on Broadway, the show has been seen by 1,659,867 theatergoers to date. Featuring music by Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, choreographed by Peter Darling and directed by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot began previews Wednesday, October 1 and opened to critical acclaim on November 13, 2008.

In partnership with the Cincinnati Arts Association's Overture Awards and Local 12 WKRC, and in celebration of the upcoming local engagement of Billy Elliot the Musical, Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati is proud to announce the Billy Elliot Dream Award. This award and scholarship will be presented to a Tri-State student in grades 6 through 12 who is pursuing an artistic dream. The prize will consist of a $500 scholarship provided by Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati's Education Fund.
In an interview with the January 1st Los Angeles Times, Elton John spoke about his plans for an upcoming biopic that he currently has in the works. When asked in the recent interview about which actor John has in mind to take on the starring role, the singer replied, 'I don't know. I've got a wish list of people. No. 1 on my wish list is Justin Timberlake, because he played me before in a David LaChapelle video of 'Rocket Man' and was superb.'
The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds tells the story of Tillie, a hopeful and focused dreamer who struggles to keep her aspirations alive amidst the chaos of her home-life, controlled by a desperate mother wonting of love and a rebellious sister. Tensions are elevated on the night of the school science fair where Tillie is hoping to be acknowledged for her project on the effect of gamma rays on man-in-the-moon marigolds. First published in 1970, the play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the Obie Award for Best American Play.
