ANDREA MARCOVCCI is turning sixty-five this November! The tour kicks into high gear when it arrives on the east coast where Andrea debuts at both Joe's Pub (at the Public Theatre) in New York City and The Landmark Theatre in Pt. Washington, NY (Andrea's only scheduled Long Island appearance.) Plus - a return, after eight years, to the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck, NY. (More details below.)What better way to celebrate her birthday, than to honor the singers and songwriters of the 1940's and '50's that inspired the current Queen of Cabaret. The new show, 'Moonlight Cocktail,' began in Los Angeles at Tom Rolla's Gardenia in preparation for Andrea's debut at Michael Feinstein's latest club - Feinstein's at the Nikko in San Francisco. "Moonlight Cocktail" is on its way to Davenport's in Chicago this summer.
Last week BroadwayWorld reported that Disney Theatrical Productions has been experimenting with bringing a live stage version of THE MUPPETS to Broadway, but according to the New York Times, that's not the only project in the works. Many other shows based on animated Disney classics are being created for the stage including THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Peter Parnell and direction by Scott Schwartz), for which a table reading was recently held. It was announced several year ago that stage adaptations of DUMBO (direction by Stephen Daldry), and Tim Burton's version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND (direction by Rob Ashford) were in the works, though no new information has been released recently on either project.
Billy Elliot the Musical is now booking at the Victoria Palace Theatre until 21 June 2014. Now in its ninth year, Billy Elliot the Musical was recently awarded its fifth Laurence Olivier Award - the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award voted for by the theatregoing public and has been seen by over 4 million people in the West End. Check out photos of the new cast in action below!
Directed by Stephen Daltry, Dickenson (displaying a ribald belt), Perkins (a hoot), Garner and Hebert all give strong performances. Parets dances well with steps performed with precision and technical skill if not all the heart we expect. The same could be said of the special effects: fog and fly rigging are used precisely, but they fail to make our spirits soar the way they did on the Broadway stage. It's also hard to understand several of the kids who are trying very hard to do northern English accents. Entire lines of dialogue are lost.
Today we are highlighting even more clips from a flight of fancy celebrated for over 150 years - Tchaikovsky's classic SWAN LAKE, arriving this Thursday in 3D!
Beck Center for the Arts presents THE PITMEN PAINTERS, a new play from the Tony Award-winning writer of 'Billy Elliot', Lee Hall, inspired by a book by William Feaver. Directed by Sarah May, the production runs now through July 7, 2013 at the Studio Theater. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!
Have you looked at a painting and asked, 'What does that mean?' What would the world be like without the arts? Does art have to have meaning? Does the learning of artistic technique thwart a painter's discovery and creativity? What happens when a group of uneducated, unsophisticated men are encouraged to let their emotions create their world? These and many more questions are confronted in Lee Hall's THE PITMEN PAINTERS, now on stage at Beck Center.
Beck Center for the Arts presents The Pitmen Painters, tonight, May 31 through July 7, 2013 in the intimate Studio Theater. Show times are 8 p.m. Todays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are now on sale.

I first reviewed the national tour of BILLY ELLIOT - THE MUSICAL during its triumphant five-week stop at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre a year ago (which you can read HERE) and found it to be quite an entertaining, well-executed show. Now an entire year has passed and the show has finally returned to Southern California, this time playing at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts through April 28. Does it still hold up? In a special guest column, Robert Neale offers 'A Second Opinion' Review.
