The Broadway at Birdland concert series celebrated a musical trifecta on Monday night, with sublime jazz vocalist Jane Monheit, extraordinary arrangements by Mary Ann McSweeney, and a wealth of Irving Berlin material. The stellar backup band for the evening evening included McSweeney on bass, Jim Ridl on piano, and Alvester Garnett on drums. Several months ago, the Monheit-McSweeney duo teamed up with a swinging take on Cole Porter's iconic score for Anything Goes, to great acclaim.

Earlier this week, Drama Desk and Tony Award winner Laura Benanti ('The Sound of Music Live!', Gypsy, Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) hosted the 59th Annual Drama Desk Awards at The Town Hall (123 W. 43rd Street). Big winners for the night included Audra McDonald, Bryan Cranston, Jessie Mueller, and Neil Patrick Harris and Jefferson Mays- who tied for Outstanding Actor in a Musical.

An in-store reception was hosted by Paul Stuart and The Wall Street Journal with special guest hosts two-time Grammy Award winner and a two-time Tony Award winner and 2006 American Theater Hall of Fame inductee, Patti Lupone and director and Tony Award-winning lyricist (for Hairspray) Scott Wittman. Entertainment throughout the evening was provided by the legendary Broadway orchestrator (and one of 12 people to have won all four major show business awards referred to as EGOT: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) Jonathan Tunick and his 'Broadway Moonlighters'.

A month has passed, 'Jeremy's Fort' has opened to critical acclaim at Threshold Arts, and Penny (Kate Wetherhead) is still reeling from having Serena (Donna Vivino) find out about her tortured 'relationship' with Aaron (Santino Fontana). Just last night, 'Submissions Only' co-creators Kate Wetherhead and Andrew Keenan-Bolger celebrated the songs of their hit web series at 54 Below. Under the music direction of Michael Croiter, the Submissions Only House Band, along with a number of exciting guest stars, performed a selection of music from all three seasons of the show, including original songs like 'Two Cents,' 'Wrong Spot' and 'Nobody Does Mean Like Me.'

Music Conservatory of Westchester, a not-for-profit music school in White Plains, NY, will honor Tony winner Barbara Cook and conductor John Mauceri on Monday, June 23 with lifetime achievement awards and a cavalcade of Broadway talent who will pay tribute to the honorees and the Broadway stage. Tony Award winners Cady Huffman and Alice Ripley, Tony nominee Laura Osnes, and Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera star Craig Schulman will perform while John Treacy Egan, a Broadway veteran who resides in Westchester, will emcee the event held at the Whippoorwill Club in Armonk.
