Do strangers share memories? 'She Turned on the Light,' written and directed by Wendy Woodson, performed by Marina Libel, confronts the question through two perspectives: when you are a stranger in a strange land and when your remembrances seem to be carried across generations. The piece is a tour-de-force monologue with physical theater.

Historically, English adaptations of Aeschylus' 'Agamemnon' have rendered its ancient Greek poetry into proven English poetic forms. The results have been often good and occasionally brilliant. Yet the original Greek meters provide clues as to how a section of a play was performed (sung, spoken or spoken to musical accompaniment). This has prompted Alexander Harrington, a director known for his mastery of oratorical theater, to attempt something radical: approximating Aeschylus' actual, original poetic meters in a new translation. This intrepid idea has resulted in a script of surprisingly clear stage speech and unusual poetic quality. It will debut November 12 to 29, 2009 in La MaMa's large Annex Theater, performed by The Eleventh Hour Theatre Company.
The legendary Theatre of the Eighth Day from Poland will premiere Wormwood in New York City in a special two performance event on November 11 and November 12 at the Abrons Arts Center. The play was famously banned in 1985 for its frank depiction of life in Poland under Martial Law. Founded in 1964, Theatre of the Eighth Day was one of the most uncompromising theater groups in Communist Poland and remains so today. It made its US debut to critical acclaim at the MADE IN POLAND Festival in New York City in November 2008, where it presented its 2007 avant-garde docudrama, The Files, based on actual secret police reports between 1975 and 1983 on the Theatre's actors. Wormwood will also play Yale Rep November 5 - November 7.

Robert Patrick, that legendary pioneer of Gay Theatre, may spend most of his time on that other coast these days, but his heart always remains at a little storefront on Cornelia Street that once housed the birthplace of Off-Off Broadway, the Caffe Cino. One of my first assignments for BroadwayWorld was an interview with that remarkably colorful playwright, where he shared vivid memories of that exciting time in American theatre when he and the likes of Sam Shepard, Lanford Wilson and John Guare enjoyed complete artistic freedom in seeing their early efforts staged. Bernadette Peters starred in the original one-act version of Dames At Sea on the tiny Cino stage.
Tony Award winner Bill Irwin, Meredith Monk, John Kelly and Peggy Shaw will be featured performers at La MaMa's 'Celebrating Ellen' fundraising event benefiting the non-profit theater on November 1 in the company's Annex Theatre.

Italy's Dario D'Ambrosi, a radical innovator of the theater and founder of the movement called Teatro Patologico (Pathological Theater), will stage a novel version of 'Romeo and Juliet' at La MaMa. The production opens on December 3rd and runs through December 13th.
