Winners of Dallas Opera Guild Vocal Competition Announced

The Dallas Opera Guild's 24th Annual Vocal Competition for young opera singers ended on a high-note last evening when ten outstanding finalists (with Texas connections) were awarded a total of $20,000 in prize monies. It is only the second time this spring musical event has graced the stage of the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in the Arts District.

Rebecca Davis, Constantinos Yiannoudes to Star in Opera Idaho's BALLAD OF BABY DOE

Opera Idaho welcomes new-to-Boise artists Constantinos Yiannoudes (Horace Tabor) and Rebecca David (Baby Doe)! Co-Artist-in-Residence Michele Detwiler returns to the stage to play Horace's first wife Augusta Tabor, and Tiffany Calàs returns to play Mama McCourt. Baby Doe will be conducted by Sara Jobin (Our Town, 2010) and directed by David Cox (Our Town, 2010).

Thomas Hampson Sings His First Met Performances of Verdi’s Macbeth

Thomas Hampson will make his Met role debut as the power-hungry title character in a revival of Verdi's Macbeth opening March 15. Star soprano Nadja Michael makes her Met debut as the bloodthirsty Lady Macbeth. Adrian Noble returns to the Met to direct the first revival of his 2007 production, which will be conducted by Gianandrea Noseda for the first time at the Met. Dimitri Pittas reprises his acclaimed portrayal of Macduff, and Gunther Groissbock makes his Met role debut as the vengeful Banquo.

Dallas Opera Presents LA TRAVIATA, 3/13-29

The Dallas Opera presents the third main stage production of the 2011-2012 "Tragic Obsessions" Season: Giuseppe Verdi's tender and bittersweet romance, LA TRAVIATA, opening Friday, April 13, 2012 at 7:30 PM in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Downtown Dallas. This will be the first time Verdi's "Fallen Woman" has appeared on the Winspear stage.

Lincoln Center Theater to Present GOLDEN BOY & VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE This Fall

Lincoln Center Theater has announced two productions that will open this fall: a 75th Anniversary production of the Clifford Odets' classic GOLDEN BOY, to be directed by Bartlett Sher beginning performances Thursday November 8 and opening Monday, December 3 at a Broadway theatre to be announced; and the New York premiere of VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE a new play by Christopher Durang, to be directed by Nicholas Martin, beginning performances Thursday, October 25 and opening Monday, November 12 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater (150 West 65 Street).

Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore Returns to the Met, Opening 3/5

A trio of international stars will sing the leading roles in a revival of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, opening March 5. Juan Diego Florez will sing his first Met performances of Nemorino, the simple country boy who falls in love with the beautiful Adina, sung by Diana Damrau in her house role debut. Mariusz Kwiecien adds a new role to his Met repertory as Belcore, Adina's posturing fiance, and Alessandro Corbelli reprises his acclaimed interpretation of Dulcamara, the traveling quack whose phony love potion creates real romantic intrigue among the three characters. Donato Renzetti returns to the Met for the first time in more than 20 years to conduct this revival of John Copley's colorful 1991 production.

Dallas Opera to Host MAGIC FLUTE Screening at Cowboys Stadium, 4/28

Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE will be simulcast live on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 7:30 PM (doors open at 6:00 PM) at the high-tech home of the Dallas Cowboys at One Legends Way in Arlington, Texas. Patrons will be able to enjoy a complete, unabridged live performance on the world's largest high-definition video board structure, comprised of four massive viewing screens (the largest, 72 feet tall and 160 feet wide) suspended directly above the playing field.

Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Performs Benefit Concert

PYO's Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra (PYAO) will perform a benefit concert for The Union League of Philadelphia's Youth Work Foundation in Lincoln Hall on Sunday, March 4 at 2p.m. Geoffrey McDonald will conduct more than 70 talented middle- and high-school aged classical musicians in Rossini's 'Overture to Il barbiere di Siviglia,' Britten's 'Matinées Musicales' and Beethoven's 'Symphony No. 1.'

Winners Announced for 41st Annual George London Foundation Awards

The winners of the 41st annual George London Foundation Awards Competition for young American and Canadian opera singers were announced at the conclusion of the competition's final round this evening, which took place in a front of a capacity audience at Gilder Lehrman Hall at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City.

Marco Armiliato Replaces Previous Conductor for IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA at The Met 2/15-18

The Metropolitan Opera (The Met) has just announced that Marco Armiliato will conduct Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia on February 15 and 18 matinee, replacing Maurizio Benini, who has withdrawn for personal reasons. Armiliato, who is currently conducting Verdi's Aida and Ernani, will now be conducting six out of seven Met performances this week. This is the highest number of performances for a conductor in a single week in Met history.

Kyle Ketelsen and Bryn Terfel Step in as Leporello in Metropolitan Opera's DON GIOVANNI

Kyle Ketelsen and Bryn Terfel will sing four performances each of the role of Leporello in the upcoming performances of Don Giovanni, replacing John Relyea who is now on vocal rest at his physician's instructions. Ketelsen will sing the role on February 21, 24, 29, and March 3; Terfel will sing the role on March 7, 10 mat, 14, and 17.

THE ENCHANTED ISLAND Debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, 12/31

The Enchanted Island, a world premiere work that combines Baroque music with a new, English-language libretto featuring characters from Shakespeare's The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream, will premiere at the Metropolitan Opera on December 31, 2011.
