Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Presents SCHUBERT'S SIXTH, Now thru 11/24

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra presents Schubert's Sixth today, November 22-24, 2013 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Led by guest conductor Hans Graf, the performances feature the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, Lee Erickson, director, in Schubert's Mass No. 6 in E-flat major, D. 950 and Mozart's Symphony No. 39 in E-flat major, K. 543. Featured soloists include soprano Joe?lle Harvey, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Rivera, tenor Marc Molomot, tenor Sean Panikkar, and baritone Tyler Duncan.

Oakland Symphony Chorus Opens 55th Season With Brahms Tonight

Celebrating the opening of its 55th season, Oakland Symphony Chorus and Music Director Dr. Lynne Morrow will give one performance only of Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes tonight, November 16, at 7:30 pm at First Covenant Church in Oakland. The performance will culminate an 11-week intensive workshop on the work that is open to the public. Admission to tonight's November 16 performance is free of charge.

The Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal's New Recording of Mahler's Orchestral Songs, with Baritone Christian Gerhaher, Under the Direction of Kent Nagano

Sony Classical releases an awe-inspiring rendition of three cycles of lieder from Gustav Mahler sung by world-renowned German baritone Christian Gerhaher, accompanied by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, under the direction of Kent Nagano. These songs were recorded during the January 12 and 14, 2013 concerts, at the Maison Symphonique De Montréal. This is the second collaboration between Christian Gerhaher and the OSM, the first being the Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth).

In Mahler's mighty 'Resurrection' symphony, he dramatically addresses life-and-death issues as only he could-'one is battered to the ground and then raised on angels' wings to the highest heights.' CSO Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni opens the 2013-14 season by leading the Columbus Symphony Chorus, featured guest vocalists Dominique Labelle (soprano) and Sasha Cooke (mezzo-soprano), and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, including an off-stage brass ensemble echoing the last judgement from another world. This will also be the official debut of Jean-Sebastien Roy as the CSO's new concertmaster.

JCCSF and First Voice Present MU World Premiere, Now thru 9/29

The Jewish Community Center of San Francisco (JCCSF) joins forces with First Voice to present the World Premiere of MU, a magical fable created by National Endowment for the Arts Fellow playwright/artistic director Brenda Wong Aoki, Emmy-winning composer Mark Izu, and Tony-nominated choreographer Kimi Okada, and featuring fantasy costumes by Beaver Bauer. Based on a Japanese legend, MU is a beguiling tale both otherworldly and deeply personal. Three performances take place in Kanbar Hall tonight, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28 at 8 pm, with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday, Sept. 29, to be followed by a national tour.

Oakland Symphony Chorus Announces 55th Season

Performances of choral masterworks by Brahms, Berlioz and Handel; Winter and Spring holiday concerts and a selection of community events will highlight the Oakland Symphony Chorus' 2013—2014, 55th annual concert season, Music Director Dr. Lynne Morrow has announced. Four concerts will feature Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes on November 16, 2013, culminating an 11-week community workshop exploring their music and history; the annual holiday “Let Us Break Bread Together” December 15 with Oakland East Bay Symphony and guests; an Easter-time sing-along of Handel's Messiah April 13, 2014 and the monumental Berlioz Requiem with Oakland East Bay Symphony May 16, 2014 celebrating the Chorus' 55th anniversary, Oakland East Bay Symphony's 25th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of Oakland Youth Orchestra. In addition, the Chorus will present a Discovery Day event for the community to explore, learn about and hear portions of the Berlioz Requiem on April 26, 2014. DON GIOVANNI, MADAMA BUTTERFLY and More Continue Cape Town Opera's 2013 Season

Cape Town Opera opened its 2013 season in April to rave reviews with Verdi's Otello, an international collaboration between Cape Town Opera and five major Australian and New Zealand opera companies, set to tour for five years. Next on the calendar were two short operas from South Africa and Sweden, entitled TWO:30, staged in Cape Town and in Stockholm to critical acclaim.

MUSE/IQUE, known for its counter-conventional performances that feel more like parties than formal concerts, continues 'Summer of Sound' 2013 with 'Moving Pictures' featuring groundbreaking cellist Matt Haimovitz and Emmy Award-winning actress Wendie Malick ('Hot in Cleveland') in a fresh take on motion picture scores by Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Vangelis, Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Claude-Michel Schonberg and Erich Korngold as well as the world premiere of Sleepwalking, a concerto for cello and chamber orchestra with images by Peter Golub, prolific composer and director of Sundance's Film Music Program, tonight, July 27, 2013, 7:30 pm, outdoors at Caltech's Beckman Mall in Pasadena.

Montreal Symphony to Present A COOL CLASSIC JOURNEY, Aug 16-17

A two-day musical event in the heart of Montreal's cultural district. A Cool Classical Journey offers 30 concerts of 45 minutes featuring a wide variety of works from the classical repertoire, with a special dedication to Mozart. Symphonic, chamber and family concerts, as well as solo instrumental recitals, fill out the rich schedule.
