Talkback With Nancy Romer Follows EXTREME WEATHER At La MaMa

Nancy Romer, a member of the People's Climate March Steering Committee, will discuss how to promote a culture of sustainability and environmental justice March 3 following the performance of 'Extreme Whether' by Karen Malpede at La MaMa Theater, 66 East 4th Street.  The play is a drama of America's intense struggle over climate science.

La MaMa Presents EXTREME WHETHER, A Cli-Fi Play By Karen Malpede

From March 1 to 18, La MaMa will present Theater Three Collaborative in a new production of 'Extreme Whether,' a 'Cli-Fi' play written and directed by Karen Malpede. The piece juxtaposes psychological and magical realism in a tale of a courageous climate researcher who is defamed by special interests, including his own family. Obie-winner Rocco Sisto heads a cast of six.

Karen Malpede's THE BEEKEEPER'S DAUGHTER Set for TNC, 6/2-26

In 'The Beekeeper's Daughter' by Karen Malpede, a pregnant Muslim refugee from Bosnia is embraced by an eccentric American family on an island in the Adriatic.  The island is a sanctuary, but it is only a short distance from the region's genocidal civil war. What happens between them turns everyone's life inside out and upside down yet results in a healing journey.  Theater for the New City (TNC) and Theater Three Collaborative will present the piece June 2 to 26, directed by the author, in TNC's Cino Theater.

OUT OF FOCUS Adds Second Performance at United Solo

A new solo play written and performed by Geralyn Cassidy, directed by George Bartenieff, making its world premiere at United Solo, is now a bestseller. OUT OF FOCUS, in part, is based on Cassidy's own experience working in the background in film and television in NYC.  She plays background actor, Happy Ness, as well as casting directors, crew members, makeup artists, actors and a few surprises that give voice to surroundings beyond the foreground.

Climate Change Theatre Action to Hold Kick Off Event at Nuyorican Poets Cafe, 11/2

Neil LaBute, Erik Ehn, Arthur Kopit, Deborah Laufer, Ryan McCurdy of Broadway's ONCE, and Heather Woodbury join CLIMATE CHANGE THEATRE ACTION - a series of worldwide readings and performances intended to bring awareness to, and foster discussion around, climate change during the months of November and December 2015.

'Extreme Whether,' a new 'eco-drama' written and directed by Karen Malpede, centers on an embattled American climate scientist living in an idyllic wilderness estate in the Northeast Coast. Set during the record-hot summers of 2004 and 2012, the play pits the scientist against his twin sister in a no-holds barred family struggle over land ownership and the future use of their wilderness estate. In one corner is John Bjornson, a composite of famous climatologists. In the other is his twin sister, Jeanne, an energy spokeswoman married to a skeptical lobbyist. Actor Jeff McCarthy ('Cheers,' 'Urinetown,' 'Chicago') heads the cast of six as the scientist. Theater Three Collaborative and Theater for the New City will present the work at TNC today, October 2 to 26, 2014, directed by the author.

ANOTHER LIFE at Theater for the New City Reacts to Guantanamo Bay Hunger Strike

As events unfold in the forcible repression of the hunger strike by 88 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, we are entering the final week of 'Another Life,' written and directed by Karen Malpede, presented by Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave. The play protests the Bush era torture program and the indefinite detentions of our post-9/11 world. Its cast and company, shocked by news from Gitmo, will host post-play discussions during the play's final week as community forums for playgoers to exchange thoughts and concerns on the events.
