Evening with Pulitzer Prize-Winner Michael Chabon Set for Berkeley, 10/2

Oakland's Park Day School will host an evening in conversation with literary luminary and Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon, Wednesday, October 2, 7:00pm, at the beautiful Julia Morgan Theatre (2640 College Avenue, Berkeley.) The venue's intimate setting will allow for a personal and authentic experience for those in attendance to hear from the accomplished author on a variety of topics and ask questions of their own. This incisive and candid conversation with Chabon and Park Day School's Zach Wyner will benefit the school's academic and financial assistance programs.

Theater at Monmouth Presents THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, Now thru 8/17

Rounding out Theater at Monmouth's 2013 summer fare is Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, opening tonight, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. In this adaptation of her best-selling memoir of the same name, Didion presents a life-affirming approach to the grief experienced after the death of a loved one. Told with eloquent language, humor, and the searing candor Didion is known for, this one-woman tour de force paints an insightful portrait of a lifetime of love and a moment of loss.

Berkeley Playhouse presents its next TeenStage production, BYE BYE BIRDIE. BYE BYE BIRDIE is one of the most captivating musical shows of our time. The show is set to run tonight, July 25 at 7pm, and July 26 at 3:15 pm and 7pm at the Julia Morgan Theater.

Aurora Theatre Mourns Passing of Founding Artistic Director Barbara Oliver

It is with great sadness that Aurora Theatre Company announces the passing of the company's founding Artistic Director Barbara Oliver due to complications from a recent stroke. Barbara passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 20 at her Berkeley home, surrounded by family.

THE WIZ to Close Berkeley Playhouse's 5th Season, 7/13-8/25

The final main stage production of Berkeley Playhouse's fifth season is the Tony Award-winning THE WIZ, a soulful re-imaging of L. Frank Baum's family classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The production will run July 13-August 25, 2013, featuring Book by William F. Brown and Music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls.

Berkeley Playhouse Opens DISNEY'S ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR, 5/31

Berkeley Playhouse presents its next KidStage production, DISNEY'S ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR. Based on the 1951 Disney film "Alice in Wonderland," and the novels "The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, this madcap musical follows young Alice down the rabbit hole into a wonderland of adventure as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, goes to the craziest tea party ever, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game. Featuring familiar songs from the original animated Disney classic, including "The Unbirthday Song," "I'm Late," and "Painting the Roses Red," along with additional sing-along gems like "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR. is a musical feast for the entire family.

Berkeley Playhouse Presents GUYS AND DOLLS, Now thru 4/28

Berkeley Playhouse continues its fifth season with the Tony-winning GUYS AND DOLLS. This oddball romantic comedy finds gambler Nathan Detroit desperate for money to pay for his floating crap game. To seed his opportunity, he bets Sky Masterson a thousand dollars that Sky will not be able to make the next girl he sees, Save a Soul Mission do-gooder Sarah Brown, fall in love with him. While Sky is eventually able to convince Sarah to be his girl, Nathan fights his own battles with Adelaide, his fiance of 14 years. Often called 'the perfect musical,' GUYS AND DOLLS features such bright and brassy songs as 'A Bushel and a Peck' 'Luck Be a Lady,' and 'Adelaide's Lament.' Jon Tracy (Berkeley Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company, Shotgun Players, San Francisco Playhouse, Magic Theatre) helms this musical, his seventh production for Berkeley Playhouse.

Berkeley Playhouse continues its fifth season with the Tony Award-winning GUYS AND DOLLS. Jon Tracy (Berkeley Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company, Shotgun Players, San Francisco Playhouse, Magic Theatre) helms this musical from the Golden Age of Broadway, featuring a cast of 22, and choreography by Chris Black (Berkeley Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company). GUYS AND DOLLS plays tonight, March 21 through April 28 (Press opening: March 23) at the Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley.

Berkeley Playhouse Announces 2013-14 Season

Berkeley Playhouse has announced the lineup for its sixth season. The family-friendly season of musicals timeless and new opens in October with Andrew Lippa and Brian Crawley's enchanting A LITTLE PRINCESS, directed by Berkeley Playhouse Artistic Director Elizabeth McKoy. Marissa Wolf returns to the company to direct Meredith Wilson's THE MUSIC MAN in February, followed by THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE in April, directed by Kimberly Dooley. Closing the MainStage season is SHREK THE MUSICAL directed by Elizabeth McKoy in July. In addition to the MainStage season, the company will present winter, spring, and fall YouthStage productions. The entire 2013-14 season will be staged at the Julia Morgan Theater (2640 College Avenue) in Berkeley. Subscriptions ($54-$112) on-sale March 23; single tickets ($17-$60) on-sale August 1.
