Now that we are a full two weeks removed from Fox's first foray into the world of live, televised musicals, I think it is time to look back at the lessons learned from GREASE: LIVE. Though I hailed it as a rousing success in my review, on Broadway Radio's 'This Week on Broadway,' and on BWW's 'Some Like it Pop' podcast, there are a fair number of critics and viewers that had perfectly reasonable hesitations. Whether it was occasional sound issues, too strict a reliance on the film for inspiration, the wonky new song, or uneven performances, I am fine with acknowledging those shortcomings; but to me, there are three things that made GREASE: LIVE the most entertaining and artistically satisfying live musical of this recently reinvigorated phenomenon.
Let's admit it: Theater is sanctioned voyeurism, offering us a glimpse into lives we might not otherwise see. Often the payoff is in empathy, all bound up with the guilty pleasure of sitting in the dark watching other people in conflict. In BUYER & CELLAR at TheaterWorks in Hartford, empathy takes a dive while the guilty pleasure is juiced up by the addition of celebrity watching-sort of.
This spring, the hilarious Off-Broadway hit, Buyer and Cellar by Jonathan Tolins comes to NCTC, starring acclaimed performer and frequent NCTC collaborator, J. Conrad Frank, most recently at NCTC with his acclaimed performance in Charles Busch's Die Mommie Die!. Rebecca Longworth directs. In this uproarious comedy, an unemployed actor is thrust into a close relationship with Barbra Streisand when he is hired to watch over a mall of shoppes she has built in a cellar on her Malibu compound. Soon it begins to take a toll on his patience, his love life, and his view of people (who need people). As Entertainment Weekly declares, 'This show will go down like 'butta'!'
