The NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions will present a workshop production of the new show Pool Boy at the Provincetown Playhouse March 22 - 25. Directed by Steinhardt professor of musical theater, John Simpkins, the show features music and lyrics by Niko Tsakalakos, with book and lyrics by Janet Allard.

As of March 28, 2012, NYTW will have two shows running on Broadway: Once, which opened on March 18 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre to superb reviews, and Peter and the Starcatcher, which begins previews March 28 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Additionally, Rent, which originated at NYTW, is enjoying a successful off-Broadway revival at New World Stages. Both Once and Rent received their world premieres at NYTW, while NYTW presented the New York premiere of Peter and the Starcatcher.

Laughter and tears, gossip and home-grown advice are as prevalent as hair rollers in Truvy's Beauty Salon, the setting of the heartwarming comedy-drama Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling, playing at Bristol Riverside Theatre on March 20-April 8. Susan D. Atkinson directs an ensemble cast of BRT favorites including Jennie Eisenhower, Diane Findlay,Laura C. Giknis, Barbara McCulloh, Susan Moses, and Jo Twiss.

Alaska Theatre of Youth and Theatre Artists United present the pop cultural phenomenon, rock-opera, RENT, at the Sydney Laurence Theatre. The production is scheduled to run March 30 and 31, April 1, and April 4-7.

New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) has announced that the New York premiere of An Iliad, by Denis O'Hare and Lisa Peterson, based on Homer's Iliad translated by Robert Fagles, directed by Ms. Peterson, will extend for one week through Sunday, April 1, at NYTW, 79 East 4 Street, between Bowery and Second Avenue. Mr. O'Hare and Stephen Spinella will continue to alternate performances of the play.

Porchlight Music Theatre presents Jonathan Larson's tick, tick…BOOM!, directed by Adam Pelty with music direction by Diana Lawrence, at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., April 28 - June 10. Preview performances are Saturday, April 28 at 8 p.m., Sunday, April 29 at 2 and 6 p.m. and Monday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. Opening/press night is Thursday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. The performance schedule is Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. There is an additional Friday, June 1 performance at 10 p.m. Single tickets are $38 with group and student discounts available. On February 13, New York Theatre Barn will present NYTB in the D-Lounge, a monthly concert for emerging musical theatre writers, now in its 5th year, at the Daryl Roth Theatre. The February 2012 installment of NYTB in the D-Lounge introduces to New York audiences Illinois-native, singer-songwriter Kevin Fogarty, who will present selections from his full-length musicals, and showcases Jonathan Larson Award-winner J. Oconer Navarro, who will present the world premiere of songs from two new musicals by himself and collaborators. Performers include Charlie Brady, Joaquina Kalukango, Zonya Love, and more. Executive Producers for NYTB in the D-Lounge are Laura Brandel and Jason Najjoum.

When you take on an iconoclastic production such as Jonathan Larson's RENT, you either have a whole lot of talent in your back pocket, or you are just plain ludicrous. Fortunately for Shadowbox Live, it was a case of the former that resulted in a fantastic opportunity to see this incredible story about Bohemians in Alphabet City, NYC struggling with life, love and AIDS, brought to life in local form.

Producer John Johnson announced today the complete cast for the New York premiere of 35mm A Musical Exhibition, written by Ryan Scott Oliver based on the photography of Matthew Murphy.

RENT performs at the Centrepointe Theatre through March 11th with direction by Nicole Milne, musical direction by James Caswell and choreography by Debbie Millett.
