BWW Reviews: Entertaining Version of GREASE at The MUNY
by Chris Gibson
- Aug 5, 2014
There have been a lot of versions of Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey's (book, music and lyrics) GREASE that I've seen over the years. Only one, New Line Theatre's brilliant staging a few years back, actually adhered to the musical as originally conceived. The majority have followed the template laid down by the 1978 movie version that was tailored to fit the stars; Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. That's the version currently gracing the stage of The MUNY, although it features a number of interesting changes, beginning with a choral version of the opening "Alma Mater" that actually utilizes the lyrics to the song "We Go Together". It's certainly an entertaining ride, and is much improved in many ways over the version staged here back in 2007.
Luxembourg & Dayan Presents THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE, 8/14-10/4
by BWW News Desk
- Jul 30, 2014
In Luis Buñuel's 1977 film “That Obscure Object of Desire,” the hero lusts after a tantalizing and elusive woman. His obsession spirals out of control, clouding his judgment and ultimately leading him to a state of utter submissiveness. Borrowing the title of Buñel's film, Luxembourg & Dayan is pleased to present an exhibition that explores the dark side of desire, highlighting the often-suppressed connection between an artwork and a fetishized object. The process of object making is here explored as an obsessive endeavor akin in its intensity to erotic infatuation. Each of the artists represented in That Obscure Object of Desire is continuously drawn to forms, processes, and materials with bodily connotations that oscillate between the sexual and the abject, reworked in countless variations.

Quentin Tarantino's Academy Award-winning film PULP FICTION is coming to the stage! Qulum Entertainment will present the stage version at the University Theatre in Calgary, Alberta.
In a recent interview with the Calgary Sun, Producer Quintin Pomeroy revealed: 'The elements that made Pulp Fiction one of the top five American films of all time are elements that work just as well on stage especially Tarantino's dialogue. We saw what a huge success Scorpio Theatre had with its production this year of Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and we felt Pulp Fiction was an even better candidate for a stage version.'

BWW Reviews: Playhouse on the Square Teases Its Beehives in HAIRSPRAY
by Joseph Baker
- Jun 21, 2014
When Playhouse on the Square first showcased the musical version of the giddy John Waters' romp HAIRSPRAY a few seasons back, terpsichorean dynamo Courtney Oliver (as 'Tracy Turnblad') and theatre veteran Ken Zimmerman ('Miss Edna') left the stage each night with clamorous standing ovations for them and their colorful cohorts. I saw it more than once; it was the kind of theatrical experience that not only made you want to see it repeatedly, but one to which you longed to introduce others. I was thrilled to learn not only that HAIRSPRAY would return to end the current season at Playhouse, but that it would also reunite most of the original cast - and would be directed by the ever reliable Dave Landis.
