Just in time for Halloween, Orlando theatre production company Dark Side of Saturn introduces a new collection of short plays collectively titled REALMS OF THE UNTOLD. The show, written by Corey Volence (Orlando Fringe's KEY OF E), plays through October 10th at The Venue. Clearly inspired by classic horror and terror anthology series THE TWILIGHT ZONE, REALMS OF THE UNTOLD boasts six fairly intriguing premises; however, the execution of each, in terms of writing and performance, varies greatly from scene to scene. The vignettes are ultimately an enjoyable precursor to the rest of the spooky holiday attractions around town, but they don't rise to the goosebump-inspiring level that you would hope to find in a show subtitled 'Six Tales of the Strange and Macabre.'

KC and The Sunshine Band dominated the 1970s, ruling the airwaves with a unique meeting of Caribbean, pop, R&B and latin styles that inspired infectious grooves and the distinctive Sunshine Sound, producing such #1 hits as 'Get Down Tonight,' 'That's the Way (I Like It),' 'Boogie Shoes,' 'Shake Your Booty,' and many more. Before he impacted the world, teaching them how to boogie, Harry Wayne 'KC' Casey was, like the rest of America, being shaped by the music, conflicts, innocence, sex, social and political movements and counterculture of the 1960s.

I would've written about Dramatic License Production's presentation of playwright Larry Shue's THE NERD sooner, but my computer crashed. Not once, but twice. It's fixed with the help of some technical assistance, but some things got lost in the process. Kind of like how I've generally felt about most productions of THE NERD that I've seen. The number is astounding since it's a community theatre staple, and yet none have really made me laugh. That's what makes DLP's staging so intriguing and entertaining. I'm finally seeing the play done justice by a sharp cast and finely tuned direction that allows the humor to shine through. So, this is another one of those times where my opinion is that you may have thought you'd seen the play before, but you really haven't.
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about The Butterfingers Angel, Mary and Joseph, Herod the Nut and the Slaughter of the 12 Hit Carols in a Pear Tree. I mean, for sheer title length it deserves some kind of acclaim. But, it's written by William Gibson. You know, the guy who wrote The Miracle Worker and Two for the Seasaw. So, I wasn't sure what to expect. And that's a good thing. Yes, it's kind of a mixed bag at best, but I have to applaud the efforts of Stray Dog Theatre for bringing it to my attention. It's definitely worth checking out.
