The North Carolina Symphony launches its 2015 Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series at Cary's Booth Amphitheatre on Saturday, May 23, at 7:30 p.m., with a concert program that features pianist Timo Andres performing Gershwin's incomparable Rhapsody in Blue, the orchestra's performance of Dvo?ák's New World Symphony, and other works by Copland and Sousa that feature “citizen musicians” as they join the orchestra.
The Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestras (RIPYO) will present their second concert of the season, titled “A Day at the Museum,” Sunday January 18 at 3pm at the VETS in Providence. The concert will feature the top-level Symphony Orchestra conducted by Music Director Alexey Shabalin, Repertory Orchestra under the direction of Vincent Mattera,String Orchestra under the direction of Irina Naryshkova and the Intermediate String Ensemble and String Ensemble under the direction of Erin Quinton Erban. A funny thing happened on the way to Handel's MESSIAH: That would be Monty Python's LIFE OF BRIAN, transformed from the film by Eric Idle (the jokes) and John Du Prez (the music) into NOT THE MESSIAH (HE'S A VERY NAUGHTY BOY). This comic oratorio resulted in a very jolly evening, which The Collegiate Chorale brought to Carnegie Hall, under conductor and director Ted Sperling.
A voyage that celebrates American music “From Sea to Shining Sea” is on tap as the Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB) presents its first concert ever to be held at the King Center for the Performing Arts on February 22, beginning at 2 p.m. There is no charge for the concert, but tickets are required and available by contacting the band office at 724-0555.
