Salon/Sanctuary Concerts to Present LeStrange Viols in Concert, Today

Though often imagined as a primarily English ensemble, the viol consort had a rich history in France as another vehicle for that nation's characteristically colorful and expressive musical imagination. Our program will feature some wonderful examples of this gorgeous repertoire, from the intricate song settings for viols by de Lassus to the majestic ensemble music of Carissimi's teacher Charpentier and the Italian transplant Giovanni Battista Lulli, otherwise known as Lully.

DON GRIGWARE Picks The BEST PRODUCTIONS AND PERFORMANCES in LOS ANGELES THEATRE for 2015

There are undoubtedly other productions worthy of merit in 2015 which I did not cover. This list is based only on what I saw and reviewed. (alphabetical listings; Equity, Equity-waiver & Non-Equity productions are mixed) (artists performing outside LA may be included in performance categories) No set, costume, or technical awards. I leave that to the bigger awards and to the expertise of those who really know those fields inside out.

Soprano Sarah Fox Records Mozart's 'Il Re Pastore'

Leading English soprano Sarah Fox has been winning high praise for a string of recordings of late. Her last two classical CDs (a Vaughan Williams symphony CD for Sir Mark Elder and the Halle Orchestra on the Halle's own label and, more Vaughan Williams, 'Dona nobis pacem' for Andrew Litton and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on Hyperion) were, variously, Gramophone Award-nominated, and named Gramophone Editor's Choice and BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Month. And her recent Cole Porter songs CD, for Signum, was picked by David Mellor as CD of the Week in the Mail On Sunday. Still, it isn't every day that one gets to record a leading role in an underperformed Mozart opera - so she was thrilled to be asked to sing Aminta in Classical Opera's Il Re Pastore, out this month from Signum.

BWW Reviews: THE FABULOUS LIPITONES Bring Back Barbershop at the Colony

In its California premiere The Fabulous Lipitones by John Markus and Mark St. Germain sounds like a silly promo for an overrated sexual enhancement product and with its initially corny lines could easily fall into the category of 'sitcom onstage' comedy, but thank heavens it rises far above and beyond. Lipitones is a deliciously funny and substantially reflective take on what might happen if a traditional barbershop quartet inducted a culturally un...suitable replacement. Now onstage at the Colony Theatre, Burbank, Lipitones will make you laugh your pants off!
