John Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, Holiday Concerts and More Set for Houston Symphony, Dec 2013

The Houston Symphony's December calendar features a special one-night-only performance as John Williams Joins Yo-Yo Ma on December 5 at Jones Hall. The Symphony will also celebrate the holidays with concerts for the entire family. On December 13, 14 and 15, the Symphony and Chorus will perform Very Merry Pops, which celebrates the season with holiday hits including a special piece, Glad Tidings, which features spiritual leaders from the Houston community as guest narrators.

The Vagrancy is honored to bring you the West Coast Premiere of BOTTOM OF THE WORLD by Lucy Thurber. This poignant, quirky, emotional drama unfolds around a young woman dealing with her sister's sudden death. This life-affirming piece, helmed by Director Sabina Ptasznik, flashes back to 1910 Appalachia accompanied by live bluegrass band, Blue Bird Bandits. BOTTOM OF THE WORLD elicits a heartfelt look at the various characters' struggle through loss and longing, while striving for human connection. Ptasznik says, 'This is the kind of show that asks you to abandon your perception of what love is. It is my hope that someone who sees the show is inspired to question what people in their lives mean in simple, yet unconventional, ways. This show is a return to simplicity in complicated, heavy times.'After the play patrons are welcome to a VAGRANT HOOTENANNY hosted by Blue Bird Bandits. Fun, dancing and moonshine guaranteed. Playwright Lucy Thurber's THE HILL TOWN PLAYS, a 5-play cycle, currently plays in 4 venues all across New York City. BOTTOM OF THE WORLD opens at The Lounge Theatres and runs tonight, October 12th - November 3rd.

Houston Chamber Choir presents Requiem for a President, Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 7:30 pm at the historic Christ Church Cathedral(1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, TX 77002). The evening offers a poignant 50th anniversary observance of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. The concert takes place less than two blocks away from where President Kennedy attended an event at the Rice Hotel on November 21, 1963, the night before his trip to Dallas. The concert features Maurice Durufle's Requiem for choir and organ, A Curse Upon Iron by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis. and Samuel Barber's renowned Adagio for Strings, arranged for voices.

Houston Grand Opera, with Music Director Patrick Summers and Managing Director Perryn Leech, announces its 2012-13 season, headlined by four new productions. The first of these is Puccini's La boheme, which launches the new season with a new staging by award-winning British director John Caird. To honor 2013's joint bicentennials of Wagner and Verdi, the coming season juxtaposes Tristan und Isolde - starring Ben Heppner and Nina Stemme in a new contemporary staging by Christof Loy - with a revival of Steven Lawless's unforgettable take on Il trovatore. British conductor Trevor Pinnock leads a strong international cast in Mozart's ensemble masterpiece Don Giovanni, while Francesca Zambello's new production of Kern and Hammerstein's Show Boat brings together stars of Broadway and the opera house in a celebration of America's own contribution to the art. For a more intimate experience, Daniela Barcellona and Lawrence Brownlee star in Rossini's dramma giocoso, The Italian Girl in Algiers.
