COC Explores Myths And Lore In 2019/2020 Season With International Opera Legends

The Canadian Opera Company offers three bold new productions in 2019/2020 that hone in on the stories and myths that shape our perceptions and the ones that offer escape from all things ordinary. This 69th season features new productions of Puccini's Turandot, Dvo k's Rusalka, and Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel, as well as COC revivals of Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Verdi's Aida, and Wagner's The Flying Dutchman.

COC Set To WOW Young Audiences With Modern-Day Opera Fairy Tale

The Canadian Opera Company presents the Cinderella story with a magical middle school twist, when WOW Factor: A Cinderella Story premieres at the Imperial Oil Opera Theatre with four public performances on December 1 and 2, 2018. With a musical adaptation by Stephane Mayer, of the COC's Ensemble Studio, and a new English libretto by Against the Grain Theatre's Joel Ivany, this family-friendly opera brings Rossini's La Cenerentola into the 21st century.

Peak Performances Kicks Off Season with Afro-Cuban-Yiddish Opera

Peak Performances kicks off its 2018-19 season with the world premiere of Hatuey: Memory of Fire, a rousing Afro-Cuban-Yiddish opera performed in English, Yiddish and Spanish, with music by Frank London, libretto by Elise Thoron, direction by Mary Birnbaum, and choreography by Maija Garcia.

Opera Columbus, Against the Grain Theatre and Banff Centre Seek Members for Virtual Chorus Extravaganza

Opera Columbus, along with co-producers Against the Grain Theatre in Toronto, Ontario and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff, Alberta are developing Christoph Willibald Gluck's most famous work, Orph e et Eurydice (Berlioz version). Premiering in 1762, the opera was in the vanguard, changing the way that the musical form was experienced. Opera Columbus' interpretation of the piece while staying true to the music and feel of the Baroque original -- will place the work firmly in the 21st century with new electronic orchestration, baroque burlesque dancers, sopranos singing from silks, and aerial dancers. Most importantly, the co-producers are seeking singers of all types who are interested in becoming part of the production's virtual chorus.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra Announces 95th Season

Fresh from a memorable, ambitious tour of Israel and Europe, the intrepid musicians of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) jump back into action. The TSO's 95th season is coming to an end, but the month of June is bursting with highly anticipated events, such as the new, semi-staged production of Kurt Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins; William Walton's mighty Belshazzar's Feast; and Carl Orff's epic Carmina Burana-all part of this season's final instalment of The Decades Project, in partnership with the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). Highlighting the 100th birthday of Ella Fitzgerald, the TSO pays tribute to one of the greatest singers of all time. Opera Columbus Opera On The Edge To Premiere Abridged, English Version of LA BOHEME

Opera Columbus continues its innovative Opera on the Edge program in the 2016-17 season, presenting an hour-long, abridged, English-language adaptation of Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme. Opera on the Edge performances are designed to provide an introduction to opera for those who have no experience with the art form or who may not be inclined to attend a traditional opera performance in a theatre.
