Mayor Deems 10/19 MEMPHIS Day; Tour to Launch at Memphis' Orpheum

The winner of four 2010 Tony awards including Best Musical, MEMPHIS celebrates its one year anniversary on Broadway Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the Shubert Theatre. The Mayor's office has deemed tomorrow - Tuesday, October 19th MEMPHIS Day! The mayoral proclamation will be read directly after the curtain tomorrow on the show's year anniversary. In addition, one lucky audience member will win a trip for two to Memphis, Tennessee to see the opening night of MEMPHIS on tour at the Orpheum Theatre.

The first major revival of David Hirson's Olivier Award-winning comedy LA BÊTE starring Tony and Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance, Tony and Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce, and BAFTA Award winner (and star of 'Absolutely Fabulous') Joanna Lumley began previews at Broadway's Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street) on September 23, 2010. This new production, helmed by acclaimed director Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage, Boeing-Boeing, The Norman Conquests), opened last night, October 14. This immediately follows a limited summer engagement at the Comedy Theatre in London's West End from June 26-September 4, 2010 with opening night of July 7. La Jolla Playhouse is pleased to announce that San Diego City Council will issue a proclamation designating Tuesday, September 28, 2010 to be La Jolla Playhouse 2010 Tony Award Day, in celebration of the 2010 Tony Award win for the hit Broadway musical Memphis, directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley. Memphis highlighted the Playhouse's 2008/9 season before transferring to New York. The proclamation will be presented to Ashley by District 1 City Councilmember Sherri S. Lightner on September 28 at 10:00 am at City Council chambers (202 C Street, 12th Floor, San Diego).

Last night, September 23, the stars of Memphis were honored with a Wall of Fame painting at Tony di Napoli's restaurant to kick off the new Broadway season and celebrate the cast's one year anniversary on Broadway. The painting was created by Dan May. Valerie Smaldone produced and emceed the event, which was hosted by Tony di Napoli's Bruce Dimpflmaier.

TheatreWorks, the nationally-acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley, has announced the line-up for its 2010-2011 season. Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley and Managing Director Phil Santora announced a 41st season that will include three world premieres (bringing the company's total to 56); three regional premieres including the newest play by the author of AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, Broadway's quirky hit musical about writers writing a quirky hit musical and a spell-binding mystery about a Japanese-American veteran charged with murder; and two Broadway favorites. The company will once again lead off with an extensive New Works Festival.
