As the only 501(c)6 advocacy organization for the independent theater and performing arts population of New York City, the League of Independent Theater (which supports the interests of over 50,000 artists who vote regularly*) stands with and endorse Manhattan Borough President, Scott M. Stringer for Comptroller of The City of New York, Julie Menin for Manhattan Borough President, Jimmy Van Bramer for City Council, and other pro-Arts candidates including: Jenifer Rajkumar - District 1; Ben Kallos - District 5; Ken Biberaj - District 6; Melissa Mark-Viverito - District 8; Cliff Stanton - District 11 and Rory Lancman - District 24.

Queens Parks officials today joined Borough President Helen Marshall, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, members of Community Board 2 and the Sunnyside United Dog Society (SUDS) to break ground on $1.4 million in improvements to Torsney Playground.

During the entire month of October, performing arts organizations from across the five boroughs will be offering free tickets as a way of introducing new audiences to New York City's diverse Off Broadway, Independent Theater, Music and Dance communities.

Theater Communications Group has announced the fourth annual Free Night of Theater New York City, which will take place at participating Off-Broadway, Independent Theaters, and Music and Dance venues in all five boroughs during the entire month of October 2011. The cast and crew of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Fela!, based on the life and music of groundbreaking African composer, performer and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, will be honored by New York City Council Members Jimmy Van Bramer and Julissa Ferreras on the Steps of City Hall on Thursday, July 29.

This evening at 6:30PM, numerous prominent LGBT and progressive leaders and organizations will come together at a highly anticipated rally at Union Square in support of the LGBT Homeless Youth community.

Comedian, singer, actress, and author Sandra Bernhard will speak along with Iraq Combat Veteran and gay rights activist Dan Choi, as well as youth representatives from various organizations serving young LGBT people.
