THE LAST SHIP just played its final performance on Broadway on January 24 at theNeil Simon Theatre (where it has played 29 preview performances and 105 regular performances). On December 9, 2014, Sting, who composed The Last Ship's score, joined the cast in the role of Jackie White, the foreman of the shipyard who rallies his community to build one last ship meant to sail the world. Sting recently spoke openly about the casting switch up in an interview with The Stage.

THE LAST SHIP will play its final performance on Broadway on Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m., it has been announced by the musical's producers. The Last Ship began previews on Broadway on September 29 prior to its official opening on October 26, 2014. When the show concludes its 4-month engagement, it will have played 29 preview performances on Broadway and 105 regular performances at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 W. 52 St.) The Last Ship's music will live on with the Original Broadway Cast Recording, which was recently released on Universal Music Classics and debuted at #1 on Billboard's Cast Albums Chart last week.

I was able to catch a performance of THE LAST SHIP during previews. By intermission I knew I was looking forward to a cast recording of the musical, but I was largely uninterested in seeing the second act. I stuck it out and left inspired by the music and the cast's performances but entirely unmoved by the clunky book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey.

A once-in-a-lifetime Broadway event took place yesterday, December 21, following the matinee performance of The Last Ship when patrons were invited to meet Sting and members of the cast on stage at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 W. 52 St.) as they signed copies of the recently released Original Broadway Cast Recording. 16-time Grammy Award winning musician Sting, who now stars in The Last Ship (for which he also composed the score), was joined by cast mates Michael Esper, Rachel Tucker,Jimmy Nail,Fred Applegate, Aaron Lazar, Sally Ann Triplett and Collin Kelly-Sordelet.
