Catherine Malfitano, Brian Castner and More to Participate in InsightALT, 5/28

American Lyric Theater (ALT) today announced details of InsightALT, the company's first festival dedicated to providing an intimate, up-close look at its process of creating new operas. Taking place between May 28 and June 3, 2013 at the Goldman-Sonnenfeldt Family Auditorium of the The JCC in Manhattan, a state-of-the-art theater on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the festival kicks-off with a special public master class by world-renown soprano Catherine Malfitano. At the center of the festival are concert readings of three new operas in different stages of their development at ALT: The Turing Project by composer Justine F. Chen and librettist David Simpatico; The Long Walk by composer Jeremy Howard Beck and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann (based on the book 'The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life that Follows' by Brian Castner); and La Reina by composer Jorge Sosa and librettist Laura Sosa Pedroza. All three operas will feature leading singers and rising-stars from the country's preeminent opera houses. Themes behind these works will be explored in two symposia led by ALT and Glyndebourne dramaturg Cori Ellison, one of the leading creative figures in the opera world today.

American Lyric Theater Announces National Expansion of Composer Librettist Development Program

Lawrence Edelson, Producing Artistic Director of American Lyric Theater, announced today the national expansion of the company's core initiative, The Composer Librettist Development Program (CLDP). Through the use of newly acquired HD teleconferencing technology, gifted emerging artists with an interest in writing for the opera stage will be able to participate in the CLDP, regardless of where they live in the country.

American Lyric Theater Awarded Two $15,000 Grants by OPERA America

American Lyric Theater (ALT) has been awarded two grants of $15,000 each from OPERA America's THE OPERA FUND for Repertoire Development. Announced earlier today by OPERA America, the grants are for two operas in development at ALT: La Reina by composer Jorge Sosa and librettist Laura Sosa Pedroza; and The Long Walk, by composer Jeremy Howard Beck and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann based on Brian Castner's critically acclaimed book of the same name.

OPERA America Awards Grants to 10 Opera Companies and 4 Teams of Artists

OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, has announced that it has awarded grants to 10 opera companies and four teams of artists through two funding programs: The Opera Fund: Repertoire Development and the Robert L.B. Tobin Director-Designer Showcase. These grants support the production of new North American opera and help develop the careers of promising directors and designers, respectively.

American Lyric Theater's THE GOLDEN TICKET Live Recording Released Today

American Lyric Theater (ALT) announces that the live recording of its first commissioned opera, The Golden Ticket, a comic opera by Peter Ash and Donald Sturrock based on Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is set for release from Albany Records on Amazon.com and on CD today, December 1, 2012.

American Lyric Theater (ALT) announces that the live recording of its first commissioned opera, The Golden Ticket, a comic opera by Peter Ash and Donald Sturrock based on Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is now available for pre-order from Albany Records on Amazon.com. Barksdale Theatre presents the world premiere of Scorched Earth by local author David L. Robbins and directed by Steve Perigard. Scorched Earth is an intriguing courtroom drama that examines what happens when a community must face up to its racial heritage after a tragic event shakes it to its core. Part mystery, part legal thriller, it is a story of crime and punishment set in a small Virginia mill town during one brutal, hot and unforgiving summer that lays bare the potential of the human heart to hate-and ultimately to heal. Barksdale Theatre Presents SCORCHED EARTH, 4/13-5/20

Barksdale Theatre announces the World Premiere of Scorched Earth by best-selling Richmond author, David L. Robbins, and featuring Richmond actors. This theatrical adaptation is based on Robbin's acclaimed 2002 novel of the same name. The play opens at Barksdale Theatre Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive, on Friday, April 13 and runs through Sunday, May 20, 2012. Scorched Earth director, Steve Perigard, has over fifty directing credits with Barksdale and Theatre IV including Circle Mirror Transformation, A Thousand Clowns, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Lead actor, Adrian Reider, returns to Barksdale after time in New York with Off-Broadway credits including If Memory Serves, Deathtrap, Paper Doll and television credits of Law and Order, Sex and the City, Guiding Light, As the World Turns, and All My Children. Returning to the Barksdale stage are cast members: David Janeski (Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas at Barksdale Hanover Tavern, Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter at Theatre IV), Ronnie Brown (Top Dog/Underdog at Sycamore Rouge, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at Henley Street Theatre), and David Bridgewater (August: Osage County at Cadence Theatre, Becky's New Car at Barksdale). The production welcomes McLean Jesse to Richmond in her first appearance at Barksdale Theatre. Set design by Ron Keller, resident scenic designer at Theatre VCU, accommodates thirty-three scenes from courtroom to graveside.

American Lyric Theater Announces Upcoming Season

American Lyric Theater (ALT), home to the nationally acclaimed Composer Librettist Development Program, has announced the 2011-2012 public performance season, featuring workshop performances of seven new operas by Resident Artists; as well as lectures and master classes with some of the country's leading operatic writers. While the majority of ALT's programs are dedicated to mentorship of gifted emerging composers and librettists, six public events will take place over the course of the season to introduce these writers, their work, and other exciting trends in American opera to New York City audiences.
