BILL RAUCH NAMED UNITED STATES ARTISTS FELLOW Fifty artists from across the country each receive $50,000 award

Shen Wei Dance Arts will offer New York audiences a first look at Connect Transfer II - a new version of the landmark dance that inspired Shen Wei's contribution as lead choreographer to the '08 Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremonies - which will tour modern art museums internationally beginning in the Fall of 2009, it was announced by Brett Egan, Executive Director of Shen Wei Dance Arts.

he John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation today named 25 new MacArthur Fellows for 2008. This past week, the recipients learned in a single phone call from the Foundation that they will each receive $500,000 in 'no strings attached' support over the next five years. The new Fellows work across a broad spectrum of endeavors and include a neurobiologist, a saxophonist, a critical care physician, an urban farmer, an optical physicist, a sculptor, a geriatrician, a historian of medicine, and an inventor of musical instruments. All were selected for their creativity, originality, and potential to make important contributions in the future.

Marcelo Álvarez will sing the title role in the Met's new production of Verdi's Il Trovatore, which opens February 16, 2009. He replaces Salvatore Licitra, who has withdrawn for personal reasons.

New York Theatre Workshop announces that the opening night for Beckett Shorts, an evening of four one-act plays written by Samuel Beckett and directed by JoAnne Akalaitis, will now be Tuesday, December 18.

The Public Theater in association with St. Ann's Warehouse, will extend The Wooster Group's Hamlet for an additional two weeks due to the high demand for this wildly inventive take on Shakespeare's best-known tragedy. Directed by Elizabeth LeCompte, Hamlet marks the debut of the legendary Wooster Group at The Public Theater, building upon The Public's historic role as a home for independent and experimental artists. The Wooster Group's Hamlet was scheduled to close on November 18 but will now run an additional two weeks through Sunday, December 2. The production will have an official press opening on Wednesday, October 31.
