A musical now playing on Broadway, a coproduction between two San Diego theaters, a musical staged with a local high school and two homegrown festivals were honored by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Monday at its 2013 Craig Noel Awards.
Michael Pennington, two-time Olivier Award nominee, an artist of international stature and one of England's greatest classical actors, will play the title role in William Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear directed by Arin Arbus. For the second production in Theatre for a New Audience's inaugural season at its first permanent home, the new Polonsky Shakespeare Center, 262 Ashland Place in Brooklyn, Mr. Pennington leads a company of 22 actors. King Lear begins previews March 14 for an opening March 27 and a run through May 4.
Ghostlight Records has announced the release of the original Broadway cast recording of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, the new musical currently running at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The album - produced by Joel Moss and Kurt Deutsch, with Joey Parnes serving as Executive Producer - will be released by digital outlets on February 25 with the disc available in stores and online April 1. The physical CD features a 40-page booklet with complete lyrics, color photos, a synopsis by librettist Robert L. Freedman and an essay by renowned theater writer and critic David Cote. A new Sh-K-Boom listing has revealed that the label will release a cast album for the hit Broadway musical, starring Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. As of now, no official release date has been announced.

The merry ladies and gentlemen of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder departed the Walter Kerr Theatre at the end of yesterday's matinee performance to take their afternoon tea and biscuits with new friends at the 'Downton Abbey' Food Truck, which was stationed on 50th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues in midtown Manhattan. Dressed in their warmest Edwardian attire, the cast enjoyed a warm jolt before returning to the Kerr for that evening's performance.
On Sunday, December 8, Joe Allen, owner of Joe Allen Restaurant, Orso Restaurant, and Bar Centrale (W. 46th Street, NYC) donated 50% of the entire day's proceeds from all three restaurants to Save the Children for the organization's Typhoon Haiyan Children's Relief Fund to benefit children affected by the super typhoon in the Philippines. The three restaurants total raised $10,000 to donate, and then a charitable regular at Bar Centrale matched their total. The grand total to be donated to Save the Children for their typhoon relief is $12,500.
