If there's one thing this town can't resist it's a gal who can reinvent herself, and in director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall's smashing new revival of the Cole Porter classic, Anything Goes, Sutton Foster foregoes the spunky wholesomeness that made her a Broadway star for a sleek, sophisticated and sexy turn as nightclub singer turned evangelist, Reno Sweeney.

Well, a series of winter storms has brought some fairly substantial rain to the Central Coast - but the rain certainly hasn't dampened the spirits of our area theatres which still have MUCH to offer by way of live entertainment for our audiences!
I don't know about you ... but I'm still wondering where Christmas and New Years went - and as I look at the calendar, I'm already seeing that Elvis' birthday has come and gone, and that the middle of the month will be upon us this weekend. But even though Elvis has 'left the building' again, so to speak (can you believe the King would have been 75 this year?!) - the theatres here on the California Central Coast haven't gone anywhere, and are anxious to bring you some quality live entertainment.
Well, the week of New Years has come and gone - hope you and yours had a Snappy New Year, which my Mom always said is even better than a Happy New Year! And when it comes to some pretty snappy entertainment opportunities - they are in plenteous supply here on the beautiful California Central Coast!
Well, the week of New Years is upon us, and we have the possibility of a bit of rain, but for the most part we're still doing our typical winter highs in the 60s with plenty of sunshine here on the California Central Coast. So as you contemplate celebrating New Years - why not include attending a show at one of our several area live theatre and entertainment establishments?
Well, the week of Christmas is upon us, we had a little more rain, highs may dip into the 50s, but they will soon be back in the 60s with plenty of sunshine here on the California Central Coast! And as you celebrate this Holiday time - why not include attending a performance at one of our area live theatre and entertainment venues?
Well, the first real winter rains have come and gone - and we're back to 60s and sunny during the day and 40s at night ... gotta' LOVE the way we do Winter here on the California Central Coast! And similarly - ya' gotta' love the variety of theatre that's available to our audiences who elect to spend their discretionary leisure time and dollars on live entertainment options.
Well guess what? Winter has FINALLY arrived here on the California Central Coast! Now, what we call 'winter' is a bit different than what that word means in many other places. 'Winter' here means highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s, and rain. In some of the higher elevations to our north and south, they may even get some snow - but here on the heart of the Central Coast, it just gets a little cooler and wetter than usual, and not much more. But warm or cool, rain or shine - our theatres are open for business and eagerly awaiting your presence at one of their upcoming performances!
As we turn the page on the calendar to December and start giving SERIOUS consideration as to what we will be getting for our friends and family for Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Yule, Festivus, or whatever other Holiday you might celebrate at this time of year - why not consider giving the gift of live theatre? The selection is certainly diverse - and there are options to meet virtually every budget and taste!
All right ... I give up on trying to figure out what's going on with the weather! Last week we had some coolish days with crisp, even brisk evening temps - and now they're saying we could see 80s again early this week, but be back into the 60s during the day and low 40s (maybe even upper 30s?!) at night by week's end! However, one thing I'm NOT giving up on is the wonderful theatre offerings that are to be found in plentiful supply here on the California Central Coast - come rain or come shine!
It's my firm belief that if composer Leroy Anderson, lyricist Joan Ford and bookwriter/lyricists Walter & Jean Kerr had named their brash and funny 1958 musical comedy about the love/hate relationship between a silent movie director and his reluctant star anything other than Goldilocks, it might not only have had a longer run than its five months on Broadway, but would have been a popular choice among regional and amateur theatres as well. With a good collection of snazzy tunes and well-crafted lyrics (most notably the semi-standard torcher, 'I Never Know When To Say When') and a book loaded with guffaws and wise-cracks (originally quipped by stars Elaine Stritch and Don Ameche), Goldilocks is a solid example of a show that, if not exactly a musical theatre triumph, provided a fun night out for audiences in an era when affordable ticket prices meant that not every Broadway production had to be a huge event.
Heiress Productions will celebrate the company's third anniversary by sponsoring its first playwriting competition. Scripts of full length and one-act plays which have not yet been produced or published will be accepted through Tuesday, September 1, 2009.
