The Vassar Drama department will present three performances of Aristophanes' comedic satire about war and sex, Lysistrata, directed by guest artist Ianthe Demos, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, December 6, 7, and 8, at 8:00pm, in the Martel Theater of the Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film. Demos, a 2000 Vassar graduate, co-founded the critically acclaimed One Year Lease theater company (OYL) in 2001 and their work has been widely praised by the New York Times and New York magazine among other outlets. The NHTP Senior Repertory Company presents Antigone, running tonight, May 18 through May 27, in a translation by Lewis Galantiere from the play by Jean Anouilh, which was adapted from the original Greek play by Sophocles. Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, is sentenced to execution for burying her dead brother after her uncle, King Creon, declares that his body is to be left for the vultures. The prohibition against desecrating the dead is almost as old as war itself; and recently brought swift punishment to American Marines in Afghanistan.
