On May 6th, 2016, Civic Theatre will open ASSASSINS, which will be produced in Civic's historic 19th Street Theatre and will run through Sunday, May 22nd.

Only the incredible Stephen Sondheim could make a musical about Presidential assassins and make it work. It's a dark subject that you think wouldn't be sung about. But Sondheim shows off his storytelling prowess by creating a sort of club or group therapy aspect to the group of killers as they attempt to tie all their works together with the act of their most famous member. And while the cast of the current joint production from the 5th Avenue Theatre and ACT certainly has the talent to pull off this demanding show, they don't always feel cohesive or in the same club but hopefully as they settle in that will come.

There's Sondheim music galore playing at the Lyric Stage Company as Producing Artistic Director and recognized Sondheim expert Spiro Veloudos directs an octet of Boston musical theatre performers in SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM. In effect, the composer/lyricist is the ninth member of the ensemble as he appears onscreen, larger than life, providing intimate commentary on his life, his process, and his words and music. The video affords the opportunity to sit through a master class with the master, and the living, breathing actors demonstrate his brilliance with their starry interpretations.

As the topic of guns in society becomes more and more prominent during the upcoming election season, Stephen Sondheim's controversial 1990 Off-Broadway and off-beat musical Assassins has increased in its relevancy. Rarely staged today, Assassins is an event that commands attention, and last week, we traveled to the Pico Playhouse in Los Angeles to see their version of the show, which also featured several performers familiar to Ventura County audiences.

In the film Judgement at Nuremberg, Spencer Tracy who plays the judge of the tribunals, states emphatically at the end that in the light of today's changing values, condoning these actions may seem logical, but it is not - or never is - right. Assassination is murder pure and simple. I will never condone it, even though I may understand the circumstances. I may laugh and enjoy Assassins and weigh the killers' motivations, but I will never accept them.

In this past year, we have witnessed young black men assassinated at the hands of police officers as well as a massacre in Charleston, South Carolina where a deranged racist killed nine parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Hashtags such as #Handsupdontshoot and #BlackLivesMatter have become the popular catch phrases in the juggernaut of social media. I know you are asking, 'What in the hell does this have to do with ASSASSINS the musical?' This show addresses so much more than the psychopathic motives of the nine assassins; it makes one question the gun control laws of then and now. Going into the theatre, I was excited to see a musical that I love and know very well, but my thoughts changed immediately at curtain call.
