BWW Critic's Choices: Maine 2014

Once again 2014 was a year to revel in the diversity and accomplishments of the theatrical scene in Maine. The summer and winter seasons yielded a nice balance between adventurous programming and classics. Here is my personal list for 2014, grouped by theatre company and show. 1. MAINE STATE MUSIC THEATRE once again receives my vote for the finest company in the region. Their 2014 season offered four dazzling main stage productions, including the remarkable revival of Chamberlain: A Civil War Romance, a daring and moving music theatre piece, beautifully realized by director-choreographer Marc Robin together with stars James Patterson and Kathy Voytko.

Bookworks Presents Its November Edition of IT'S ABOUT BOOKS

It is all about how an author carefully and purposely beckons each word to each page until those words pull together into a magnificent creation having a life of its own. The book I am reviewing,All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, is one such masterful creation. Don't wait for the paperback, don't wait for the movie, buy the book, now. Buy it as a gift, buy it for yourself, insist that your book club adds it to the list of must reads. Read it when you have the time to savor each and every word that has been so carefully placed. This book puts to shame many of the other books I have read this year. The characters, the story line, the settings, the time periods, the premise and purpose that stand behind the book are knitted together flawlessly, satisfying the reader completely. Every sentence is fraught with beautiful imagery.

Walter B. Biondi, Author of 'The Promiscuous Puppeteer,' Chosen as Author/Book of the Month

"The Promiscuous Puppeteer" author Walter B. Biondi was chosen by the BWD Variety Magazine as their choice for Author and Book of the month for October, 2014. The author, and his newest suspense novel, will be featured in the magazine's October 5th issue. The Promiscuous Puppeteer has been quick to receive recognition as a result of the attention it has been receiving. It's quality of ratings and reviews rival top ten best sellers. Tate Publishing is proud that one of their books and authors is receiving growing recognition for a story that the author and reviewers like to say is unlike any other. Biondi said, "There is surely no boring cookie cutter pattern like story here, I promise. The Promiscuous Puppeteer's metaphoric mask, on the cover of the book, is symbolic of the mystery contained within the overall story and it's multiple plots. As the author of The Promiscuous Puppeteer I was seduced into becoming the fictional lady's biographer. I subordinated myself to her power and subjugated myself to her will. I became her scribe." Contained in the final several pages of the book is a very uncharacteristic "About The Author" section in which the author describes his transition from being a homeless street kid to how he traded a jail cell for unimaginable public and private life success. Biondi went on to become one of the heads of two US Federal law enforcement agencies and receiving The President's Distinguished Senior Executive Of The Year Award. The author's first book, Jeremiah's Tale, was a Lulu International's top 4 best seller in 2013. Biondi was invited to be present for, and to appear at a special book signing event at, the upcoming Las Vegas Book Festival on October 16, 17, and 18, 2014. The author very recently joined in with renowned author James Patterson by personally donating hundreds of copies of "The Promiscuous Puppeteer" to Operation Gratitude to be included in Holiday Care Packages for deployed service men and women.

Innovative Public Relations President David Dean Menzies Releases Debut Novel 'OBX'

With a hurricane bearing down on the North Carolina seaside vacation mecca known as the Outer Banks, State Bureau of Investigation agent and troubled mother-of-three Michael Francis battles personal demons and real-life danger to solve a brutal politically charged murder case. 'OBX' is the debut novel by North Carolina author David Dean Menzies featuring Agent Michael Francis and her struggles to piece together a puzzle involving a serial killer, an attempt on her life, a break-in and shooting at her home, drug ring and cover-up by local law enforcement and government officials. In the midst of unexpected and confusing romantic overtures from a suspect in the case, Michael is forced to deal with human threats more dangerous than mother nature herself in a climactic ending with an unexpected twist. The roughly 78,000-word novel is an action-packed murder mystery in the spirit of Patricia Cornwell and James Patterson with a touch of southern regionalism. 'OBX' is available for the Amazon Kindle at www.amazon.com/OBX-David-Menzies-ebook/dp/B00LK3FM04/. The Outer Banks welcomes over 7 million visitors each year, many of whom are looking for a good beach read; OBX fills this niche and adds a strong female character to the list of popular murder detectives in the genre. This is the first novel by Menzies, a 22+ year public relations consultant living in the greater Raleigh, NC area. For more information, contact Menzies at obxstory@gmail.com.
