In this play about a family coping with Alzheimer's disease, Lecesne, an award-winning playwright and actor, wanted to tell a story 'about how people hold onto their stories until it is no longer necessary.'

On Thursday, Abingdon Theatre Company celebrated the opening night of THE MOTHER OF INVENTION, a new play written by James Lecesne about how one family deals with the effects of Alzheimer's. Directed by Tony Speciale, the company includes Concetta Tomei, James Davis, Dan Domingues, Angela Reed, Isabella Russo and Dale Soules, with performances set to run through February 26. Broadway veteran Dale Soules has returned to New York with her third consecutive Screen Actors Guild Award in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy for her work on the smash-hit Netflix series ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. Dale plays no-nonsense inmate Frieda Berlin who boasts neck tattoos and knows a lot about murder. She just wrapped shooting Season 5 of the award-winning series.

Abingdon Theatre Company kicks off 2017 with a limited engagement of THE DORK KNIGHT, a new play written and performed by Jason O'Connell (star of Bedlam's recent Off-Broadway hit Sense and Sensibility) about his complicated relationship with the Caped Crusader.

Concetta Tomei, best known for her roles on TV's China Beach and Providence and on stage in The Elephant Man (opposite David Bowie) and Sarah Ruhl's The Clean House, leads the cast of Abingdon Theatre Company's world premiere of THE MOTHER OF INVENTION, a new play by Academy Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award-winner James Lecesne, as Dottie Nerber.

James Lecesne is an Academy Award winner for Trevor, a Drama Desk Award winner for Word of Mouth, and an Outer Critics Circle Award winner for The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey. His new full-length play, The Mother of Invention, begins January 28th at Abingdon.

Necessary Exposure: The Female Playwright Project (on view Feb 7- March 8 2017) is a series of photographic portraits and sound installations that bring visibility to and amplify playwrights who identify as female. The third in a series, this current installation explores what it means to be writing for the theater as a woman at this moment in history.

Abingdon Theatre Company continues its Ghostlight Reading Series with TALL SKINNY CRUEL CRUEL BOYS by Caroline V. McGraw, author of Ultimate Beauty Bible (Page 73), on Thursday, December 15 at 7pm. The reading is free and open to the public at Abingdon Theatre Company's June Havoc Theatre (312 West 36th Street). Danya Taymor is set to direct.
